Sandona qu ickl y swep t by Bast 'o n the ou tsid e and then blistered by Cook with a daring o u tside man eu ver as th ey exited tum four on lap one. Cook and Bast were having a war for second in ch es behind Sandona, with Cook easing ahead to mount another cha llenge for the lead on th e final circuit. The ex-Ipswi ch rider sw u ng wide coming out of the final co rn er but he tapped th e wall , slowing himself down and letting Sandona record th e victory over Bast with Alan Christian (Good) placing fourth . "Flyin" Mike Faria (Sh oei/ Oa kley/STP Wes) made one of his patented charges from th e 40-yard line to record the win in the initial IMS Handicap main of 1983 . Dennis Bra n sfo rd (Jaw) , co m in g off fiv e straight wins in Handicap racing, was the initial leader from th e 10yard line over Buddy Robinson (Jaw) and Steve Lucero (Wes). Faria slipped past Lucero a nd then went to work on Robinson . It was handlebar to handlebar for two laps until Faria finall y bulled hi s wa y by o n lap four. Th e ex-northern California a ce caught Bransford as th ey were coming out of turn fou r a nd took over th e lead at th e white nag, sending th e crowd into a frenz y. Faria opened it up on the final lap to score th e very popular win over Bransford a n d Robinson. Tom Conrad (Irv ine Music Co. Jaw) , coming off an easy win at Costa Mesa the week before, scored the big .-" win in another laugher by taking the IMS Second Division main. Conrad, coming from the 10, took the lead on the start over 30-yard liners Pa t Hawley (Godd)and Dennis Briggs (Good). Ron Blanton (Good) went around Briggs to claim thi rd at the end of the first revolution. It a ppeared the order would rem ain th e same to the end and it started out th at way as Conrad took the checkered by a huge margin . Hawley had second in th e bag until he bit the dust in th e fin al co rner, allowing Blanton by for seco nd with Greg Ayers (Wes), coming from th e 40, end ing up thi rd . _ Larry Willey (F. R. Mill er J aw ) won both o f hi s Th ird Division rides, including th e mai n , in hi s IMS debut. Sta rt ing o n the zero, Will ey ou tbattled Brian Spea ks (Jaw ) for th e lead o n la p two a nd then held 0 [£ Tom my Walton (Jaw ) o n th e final la p for the win. Ventura local G u y Helderl ein (Jaw ) finis hed th ird. J esse Finch mo ved fro m the 30 to wi n hi s second ever IMS Junior main. Finch took the lea d wh en he and Dave Busby gal by R yan Eva ns on lap four.
