bra kes, bo th sprockets a nd the chain.
Kevin LaVo ie rela ted a wet tale
concerning hi s da y two DNF (he
rei mpounded and rod e da y three). " I
was riding al ong a rerouted sect ion
parallel to Turkey Creek that was too
swolle n to cross . I got cro ss-th readed
on th e trail and ended up with my 430
Husky sliding down a 10-foot bank
into the water. Only the tip of the
throttle grip wa s sticking out a nd I
panicked. I had to save my bike. So I
jumped in aft er it a nd th e water ca me
all the way up to my arm pits. And
cold... But I wa rme d up - yo u try
throwing a 430 Husky up a 10-foot
bank standing in water up to yo ur
armpits!"
Lojak took top honors in the 250cc
class, posting a 1158sco re, 32 seco nds
ahead of Stacy. Fredette had another
flat tire and picked up a route marker
but was still third best score with 1222.
Smith was still th e only rider in the
Over 500cc Four-Stroke ranks free of
route markers.
H yde's little 125 Husky was given a
new countershaft sprocket and chain
and it never m issed a beat, turning in
the best class score (I 199). Keith Moore
was down 76 points for second.
Day three
The weather turn ed bad, with m isting ra in all ni ght and the temperature in the high 30s at8:01 a.m. There
were 80-some bikes in the impound
but onl y 62 made th e sta rt and of
thos e, onl y 56 fini shed despite the
club running on ly the 60.I-mile red
loop. Those who fini shed dropped
few route points a nd th at put score
results on the two specia l tests, mainl y
the five-lap, eigh t-rider MX.
Lojak a nd Kadl ec diced bri efly for
two laps before Kadl ec fell a nd destroyed his rear brake. Lojak co nt in ued
to stretch h is lead, finis hi ng with the
best score of th e day .
In his hea t, Cunningham was thi rd
off th e line in th e dead-en gine start
behind Ron Ri blozi and Stacy. Ribolzi
was in th e lead but co uldn 't p u t a ny
space betw een himself a nd Stacy a nd
on th e white flag lap he sl id o u t, letting Stacy by. Cun ningha m foll owed
Ribol zi aU0SS th e lin e. '
" It was " tough ru n ," said Stacy
from the back of his Dunlop truck,
" Bu t I di d wh a t I wa nted to do: I had
three good rides a nd I finished the
three days ."
Smith, with th ree best of clas s
scores, was a tired bu t. hap py rid er
who had this to say about the th ree
days , " T hey're goi ng to have to do
someth ing pretty weird to make a
q ua lifier tougher than th is o ne." •
