CA , MAR. 27 Honda-mounted Chris Crandall took the lead only a few miles from the finish of the ninth annual Rovers Boner 44 After McCo y .dropped out it was " Do wn h i ll " Al ex ander who took th e lead . " Do w n hi ll " led th e race halfwa y around, but after -being in bed the week before with the flu, his strength started to leave him . H e didn't have enough strength to fight off Timms wh en Timms made his bid for the lead. Timms then led for a wh ile but Crandall wason the prowl. He was moving up and a few miles from the finish, he to ok over the lead at road crossin g. Crandall knew Timms was close a nd these two aces gave it their a ll for th e next few mi les. It was C randall on a borrowed Honda taking h is first o vera ll win. Ch ris wanted to tha n k his brother Curt, who gave him th e n eeded extra gas to get in , A-Trak for the borrowed H onda wh il e his KTM is la id up with a broken swingarm, O'N eal Products a nd espe cia lly hi s dad Tom . Taking second was Timms, who said he took th e lead when Alex ander . crash ed . After a tiring ra ce, Alexa n de r to ok third overa l l. T aking fourth a nd fir st 250cc was Sin cl air. Sche ffers, after gett ing hi s cha in back o n , managed to co me in for fifth . C bi ke wo nder Brett La wre nc e ca m e in fo r six th a n d firs t in class. Anothe r rider wh o threw his chain o n th e fir st loop was Ken O viatt , but Ken go t it together agai n a nd took seve nth overa ll. G ary Charters o nce agai n dominated th e 250cc Se nior class, p lac ing eig h th o vera ll. In th e 250cc Vet clas s Jeff Vaughn h ad a beau tifu l ride for ninth ove ra ll a nd th e class win . In a t 10th a n d second 250cc to dav was hard ridi ng Dav e Kenned y. . First Open Am ateur Dan Klahr had a good r ide, leading th e Amateurs m ost o f th e wa y. Steve Kn app was first in th e 250cc class. Ro n Suber had co ntro l in th e Open Senior cl ass and came in for a first in class. In the Open Vet Am at eur class Marty Pollard dazzl ed evervo n e with his first in class. . It was Chery le Waggoner who took the Women 's class after Denise Engstrom 's bike locked up in third gear. In th e Novice race Scott kept the lead from start to finish a nd took a nother first overa ll. A close second was Tim Weicher. Third overall Novice wa s C bike rider Gi ese. Fourth ov er all Novi ce was Vet rider Mark Romp. Fi rst Novice class was Victoria Scott; the Scott fami ly were all winners todav. In the Beg in ner ra ce Open rider Kirk Heintz took th e win on a Honda. Second was another Honda rider Barry Parsons on a 250cc. First C bike was Carl Koncur. Ed H ales to ok first in the Open Senior Beginner race with Lee Drewrv second . R ich ard H ammack won Open Vet Beginner honors, and al so was vot ed a m ember of th e Invaders. G ood da y for Ri ch ard . Run , but he had it when it co u nted, taking th e checkered a few seco n ds ahead of Cory Timms in a ra ce held to benefit Rescue 3. Eight miles out it was Lee Scheffers (H o n) in th e lead. Timms came by seco nd with Phil Cl oward th ird. Mike "Downhill" 'Alexa nd er was a cl ose fourth . R u n n ing fifth was a new comer to d esert racing , Ed McCoy (Ka w) , a Pro motocross rider from Santa Barbara who had his C bike o n the mov e. In the 250ccclass Dave Ken ned y h ad th e lead with #747x second and H oward McCasland third. Runn in g fir st 250cc Amateur wa s speeds ter Rob Murra y. Crandall was runn ing 10th a t th is time. In the Novice/Beginner sta rt it wa s Open Novice rider G eroge Scott Jr. and his Yamaha out in front. C bik e rid er Hans Giese had an a wesome rid e going, running second. Th ird was Open Vet rider Mark .R omp. The Beg inner race is alwa ys co m pet itive a n d o u t front tod a y wa s R and y Hansen . The leaders wer e having so me interesting dicing matches going o n a nd as th ey ca m e into th e pits it was C bike rider Ed McCo y in th e lead. Alex ander was onl y seconds beh ind h im. Both these riders left th e specta tors not believing what th ey sa w; not o fte n do es a C bike rider hav e th e lead in a d esert ra ce. Timms was a cl ose third a n d Tim Sinclair was fourth a nd leading th e 250cc Expert class. Schef£er s, who h ad th e lead until h e hit a ro ck and lost his cha in , was now running fifth . Brett Lawrence, a not her C bike rid er was giving p le nt y o f trouble to the big bike riders and was up with the lea ders ill six th . Cranda ll wa s ninth co m i ng into home ch eck. On the last loop, 45 mil es, th er e were cha nges. McCo y pi ck ed up a flat a n d it ended hi s first tr y a t a d esert race. Welch has bee n virt ua lly unbea tabl e in th e q ua rte r lit er class in local racin g , a n d it was j ust a m atter o f time befo re h e too k a n o ve ra l l. W ith Anth on y P a squ a lo tt o worki ng a ch eck po int (he's a n SCS m em ber) th is was a good chance for Kevin to move into the lim elight, a nd he wasted no tim e, leading th e race from short ly after th e sta rt all th e wa v to th e checkered fla g, so me 80 mile's lat er. A t th e en d o f th e fir st loop Welch had a strong lead with Butch Laswell, m aking a su rprise a ppeara nce . o n a new Yamaha YZ250, running a fairl y cl ose second . Troy Fitch, on a Husk y, wa s trailing in third with Bobbv Davidson close behind. Pete Sheeh an wa s holding onto the top Open cl ass spot with fifth . Sh ortl y after, Fitch dropped o u t with engine problems and Davidson moved into th e third spot. Welch took th e checkered flag with a strong lead ahead o f Laswell a nd Pete Sheeh an took third spot w hen Bobby Davidson went over the bars only a few hund red yards from the finis h line. Daryl Fo lks rode to a st rong fourth o vera ll , third 250cc with Floyd Bradley following him o n an Open Husk y. Larry Job, who sacrificed a fini shing positi on when h e sto p ped to help Davidson , ca mei n for th e six th overa l lspot a nd Davidson rem ounted a n d fini shed seventh, visibl y sh ak en. H ans Christensen (O pe n Husky). Eric Eli zondo (O pen KTNI ) a n d Angel o Ia n n ucci (O pen Maico) ro u n ded o u t th e top 10. First I25cc was Paul Kline for the third race in a ro w, a nd Denni e Cl ose to ok th e top Am at eur spot. Bryan Folks fin ished third overa ll Amateur, fir st 125cc Am at eu r, in h is fir st-ever Am at eur ride. First 250cc Amat eu r was Jim Wi schm e yer o n brother Gl en 's bike. The top Ov er 30 spot was Las Vegas 400 p romoter Casey Fo lk s while Dave Wood topped th e Over 38 class . First Novi ce was Jeff Phillips o n a 250cc whil e Ronnie Odom co p pe d th e top l25 cc Novice spot. In Mini acti on, Lance Taylor took th e o vera ll in the hard tail class, and was a lso first 60cc Novice. August Hanna fini shed seco nd o vera ll, first 60 cc Am at eur and Ch arli e Klin e topped th e 60cc Experts with third ov er a ll a hea d o f Chris T ri ck le.
