Since the last stadium race in the Co tton Bowl seven years ago, Supercross has become to ugher for the ri ders; mor e thrilling for the fans - and this year promises to be more aw esome than ever! Rider Round-Up Not only will Dallas fans witness an incredible show at the Cotton Bow l, but also the most pumped Supercross Pr os in America. The leaders who have emerged in the first nine rounds of the Series are the ones to watch in Dallas. Team Honda is hot. Led by lege nd ary superstar, Bob " H urrican e" Hannah, the Honda riders are dominating the series. The Hurricane storm watch remains in effect as Hannah pursues his goal to capture the 1983 AMA/ Wrangler Super Series crown. He credits his fast starts this year to the Honda bikes, and is out to remain on the record books as the winningesi motocrosser in America. Team Honda's second-year sensation, David Bailey, also wants the '83 championship title. He kicked off the year with his first major victory at the Anaheim opener before mor e than f 70,000 fans! J o hn ny O 'Mara is also a strong favorite to win in Dallas; along with .tea m m a tes ' Da n n y "Magoo" Chandler, and Goat Breker.. Suzuki's Ma rk "The Bomber" Barnett wants to regain his '81 Su percross Championship title in '83, and showed his intentions by taking the checkered flag at the MILL ER HIGH LIFE SU P ER BOWL OF MOTOCROSS in Atlanta las t month. Alan King, George Holland, and Scott Burn wo rth will also be in Dallas aboard Team Su zuki. A local favorite and a popular mota- cross hero who hails from San Antonio , is Kent Howerton, the " Rhinestone Cowboy." This Texan will be after a win on his home-state track in Dallas. Kawasaki-mounted, Howerton joins veteran Jeff Ward who is currently in the top 10; and 18-year-o ld Bill y L iles. The yellow and black of Team Yamaha also shows in the top 10 with th ree-time National Champion , Broc Glover, and former Su percross Champion, Mike "Too Tall" Bell. Ricky Johnson and Ron Lec hien join the Yamaha efforts in Dallas. - Better Race Format The 1983 race format packs 10 heat races and 88 laps of competition into one round of Supercross racing. A full fiel d of 60 riders will compete in two additional heat races, and fewer laps per race. Each ri der will end up racing in a minimum of three heat races or a maximum of five heat races, depending on how he places. The fans at the MILLER HIGH LI FE SUPER CROSS will see their favorite hotshoes at least three times on race night! The Battleground Ro und 10of the '83 AMAlWrangler Super Series challenges 60 top professionals in the country with 12 track obstacles. When fans take their seats in the Dall as Cotto n Bowl, they will see what advanced computer technology and many years of engineering ex perience ca n do to a stadi u m playin g field. Since the last man- made Supercross track was built in th e Dall as Cotton Bow l seven years ago, many i mprovemen ts and changes have taken place to m ake Supercross competition more exci ting th an ever. New track designs have put m ore demands o n the riders and th e bi kes; and the Da llas track will be spectacular. A winding maze of barriers, berms, ruts, bumps, and j umps, the halfmile track is trimmed with pennants and lined with 600 protective haybales. Even at minimum points, the dirt course measures 20 feet wide and one foot thick. The course is built over three layers of heavy-duty plastic and *-inch plywood. Freebies.
