Liles finished third, 10 seconds behind the leaders. " I [ell in one of the tight sections on the first lap," recounted L iles later, "and I got separated from m y bike and I couldn't get back 10 it because the whole pack was flashing by. I'll do better next moto." Bu rn worth again took the opening lead with Reid , Liles and Tarantino breathing down his neck . On lap two Burnworth got a bit sideways on the ledge and Reid edged past and into the lead, on ly to have his motor seize two laps later. As Burnworth regained the lead, Liles moved up 10 pressure for that spot. Liles moved into the lead just before the halfway point and continued to build his lead throughout the race . Burnworth held on to second to clinch the overall win , with Tarantino picking up third. Yamaha pilot John Whelchel rode a strong second rnoto to earn fourth . overall and Hollis earned fifth after Malcolm Smith/ Yamaha rider Vinc e McMahon fell with just a few laps remaining. 125 Pro J eff Ward t ook t he win f or the day as well .. the overall 12 5cc Pro title. his first major series win. CMC/Petty Products Golden State MX Series: Final round Reid, Burnworth, and Ward dazzle Saddleback finale By Te rry Whytal ORANG E, CA, APR. 11 , Al though he chose not to ride this Golden State race, Honda's Bob "Hurricane" Hannah put in an appearance at the impromptu awards ceremony at the end of the day 's event 10 where H annah, G oa l -Brek er and J eff Ward received giant I wood plaques commemorating their GSS titles. " T hey were taking a chance making your plaque ahead of time," Hannah kidded teammate Breker who was all smiles as he savored the victory. Breker had to settle for second place in the da y's event as his Honda's brakes failed in th e first moto while he was leading, and Yamaha rider Warren Reid ran away with the . win. Breker came back to win th e second moto and cl inch the series titl e as Reid pl aced second to earn th e overa ll win ah ead o f Brek er and Yamaha p ilot J im Holl ey. Suzuki's new 250cc rider Scott Burnworth pulled off th e 250cc win after battling with Reid , wh o rod e bo th classes, and Kawasak i's rising sta r Bill y Li les. J err Ward was in tot al com mand of th e 125cc Pro class and cli nc hed hi s GSS titl e by runnin g away with bo th mOlOS. " It feels good 10 win," noted Ward aft er th e race whi le c1ebra ting with a bottle of non-alcohol ic spar kling cider . 250 Pro Burnworth pow ered to th e early lead with Reid locked o n to his rear wheel and Wh eelsmith rider Kevin Davis running th ird. Burnworth quickl y opened a five second lead as the pack shifted position s beh ind him . Davis dropped out as SUZUKi rider Cl int Hardick moved into third ahead of KT' M vace Da ve Holl is, an d Bu rn worth and Reid conti n ued to increase thei r lead out front. Li les fina lly put the move on Tarant ino as bot h riders slipped pas t Hollis and started to close on H ar- Ward pulled the first mOIO holeshot and was never headed, despite a determined effort by Brian Myerscough who pushed his Bill Chapintuned production Honda to the limit. Suzuki rider Ri ck Ryan and Honda pilot Erik Kehoe battled for third place with Kehoe getting the nod at the checkers. Yamaha rider Mike Fisher placed fifth. Ryan found the hot line off the Saddleback start hill for moto two with Yamaha rider Roger Hensley running second and Ward in third. Ward moved into the lead on the second lap and cruised to an easy win. Myerscough and Kehoe moved up from mediocre sta rts to claim second and third again as Ryan dropped out with mechanical problems. Suzuki rider Chris Heisser rode spectacularly 10 move from mid-pack to fourth at the checkers, earning fourth overall ahead of Yamaha rider Mike Beier, whose 7-6 sco re was good for fifth overall. 500 Pro Breker edged Reid [or the front po sition as moto one thundered down Banzai Hil l. Yamaha rider Scott Johnson held th e number three slot with Pro Circu it/Husky rid er David Gerig running fourth . Breker and Reid quickly separated fro m the pack with Reid moving inra the lead as Breker slowed with braking problems . J ohnson moved past the str uggli ng Breker but could not close on Reid's cruise to th e ch eckers. Johnson wen t over a berm and dropped to 10th pl ace as KTM hero John Finkeldey p ushed his wa y into second as th e moto neared th e end. Holley rode a consistent race to finish th ird a hea d of Breker and Maico rid er Eric Eaton. Breker's fourth place finish clinched the GSS titl e but he a p pare nt ly wasn't satis fied with his first moto perfor- _ mance a nd vowed 10 win ro u nd two. And win he did, grabbi ng th e holeshot a nd never looking back. Reid was th e o nly rider to ge t close 10 ' Brek er as the two National sta rs showed their speed by running away from the pack.
