Terry Dai ley, Credit Manager. I am a long-time friend of the Phil Larson fam il y and have ta ken a lot of time off work to travel wit h this racing family. This family has devoted most of little Phil's life to his racing, and for good reason . Phil is one of th e most promising riders in th e U.S. toda y. Now, I' ve been told that after th e CMCGoiden State Series, Phil was to get a facto ry bike. Phil was told that if he would be a guinea pi g for Honda's new mech anic, any breakdowns or DNFs would have no effect on Ph il's getti ng th e bike . This was p rom ised ) No w that the Nationals are here, a nother rider got th e bike, because on paper he looked better. If you people bel ieve in Phil as I do, it would be greatly appreciated if yo u would writ e to Dave Arnold, H onda' s mot ocro ss team manager. a nd let him know that a grea t wrong ha s been don e to thi s o utstandi ng young racer, and should _ be righted l Write to Dave Arnold . I will leave th e ci ty and head north on Highway 1·5. In less than 80 hours I will be entering the city limits of Fa irbanks, Alas ka. In tra veling some 3020 mi les I will have encountered every type of road there is, and a variety of weather co nditions, with temperatures from 900 to below freezing. In co mp leting this record run I will have tested both myself and the eq u ipment to the limit . Some o f th e eq uipmen t I will be using to make thi s record run are th e 500cc Moto Morin i " Camel" motorcycle; motocross boots and spa re tube s by H i-P oint; T our Lion jacket and trousers . With the help of the Ham operators to rake care of the progress reports, road conditions, emergencies, and other communicat ions, along with my faithful friends and crew I will have a successfu l record run. KEN HA USER Orangevale, CA Vintage update T eam Obsolete would like to add information to that which appeared in the coverage of the 1983 Daytona Vintage Grand Prix. We had four heavyweight entries: Dave Roper and Jeff Elghanayan, both G-50 mounted: Don Vesco on th eex-Mike Hailwood Manx Norton; and Phil Mahood on the ex-Gary Nixon Triumph 500. We scored a 1-2 sweep, (Roger and Elghanayan) and narrowly missed a 1-2-3 when Besco threw his chain while running a comfortable th ird . Mahood fin ished seventh with a mi sfire. We wo uld also like to tha n k o ur sponsors: Accessory Mart , Cas tro l, and Bell Helm ets. T here is ta lk of a Vint age race at . I,.agtpH ¥,q1.t.hh s.eil¥l n.Jf lJis me~ .... , I'm writ ing th is letter to address a concern that many of yo u have expressed; the difficulty of recent enduro courses, especially District 37 even ts. Many of yo u have co mp lai ned about "killer enduros, " wh ere there is no let-up on terrain or speeds. You want to ride an end uro that is fun, yet ch allenging, a course wh ere yo u will lose points and have your riding skills tested, yet still be able to go home with bike and body in one piece and be abl e to function th e next day. The Un ited Enduro Association is holding its ann ual district enduro this year on Sunday, May I. In the past, we have held the Tuff-E-Nuff . enduro, a very demanding event, and the Silver Dollar end uro, designed for th e famil y rider. This year , we are giving both even ts a rest , and are pres enting a good old-fashioned, fun enduro, called th e " Not So Tuff-ENuf£." Rem ember wh en en duros used to be fun? You cou ld party on Saturday n ight and still get up and rid e on Sunday. Remember riding terra in that was reall y nea t and not beat- to-d eath whoop-dee-doo trail s? Rem ember enj oying yo urse lf and not ha ving to wrestle your bike over 10 miles of baseball-sized rocks? Remember when end uros used to have " normal" speeds o ver most of th e loop, and not constan t 36 and 42 mph averages? We're working hard to br in g yo u our best en duro ever, an event that can be ridden by Distr ict and fam il y end uro riders. We've en listed La rry Langley, from CRC, to help select and evalua te our loops. We invite everyone to join us on May I for a good, fun rid e. Entry information ca n be found by calli ng 213/425-3086, 5-10 p.m. See you in the dezI CHARLES B. BROWN Referee, Un ited Enduro Assn . Red Line special It is always gratifying to be recognized for o ne 's accomp lis hments. On pag e 27 of th e March 30 issue of Cycle N ews I was co ngra tu lated for winning th e Daytona BOTT Amateur Modified Class with the help or Castrol O il. The unfortunate po int is that I am sponso red by Red Line O il and have used only Red Line Oil, as has Kevin Bracken who pl aced second in th e Expert Modified BOTT at Daytona. Tim Kerrigan of Red Line has developed a fine product and we believe we have found horsepower through its use. I am confident that Castrol's error was inadvert ent, however, I feel it is important to set the record straight expecially with regard to who helps whom.. .
