Mike Bast made his sponsors, Justice Bro s. and Riv erside Mit su bish i, hap p y as he en graved his name into everyo ne 's mind as th e ma n to beat. Bast set th e pace a nd held th e lead in the Scratch mai n as Steve Lucero, J oh n Cook and Alan Christian fol lowed. The Scratch main wasn't the on ly exciting race, however, as each rider seemed hungry to sta rt his season off in winning form. The skills displayed by some of the riders hin ted of several hours of practice during the winter off-season. Lucero didn 't ha ve any succe ss in his Handicap heat, but won his Scrat ch heat and placed second in th e semi -fi na l and th e Scratch main . Cook, who will be a regular th is year a t Costa Mesa, was knocking on Mike Far ia's back doo r in their Handicap heat for second pl ace. H e came ba ck an d won his H andicap semi. Scr at ch hea t a nd Scratch semi-final. His lu ck wore 0 (( in the H andi cap ma in as h e p arked it betw een tu rns three and fou r, ca usi n g J im Law son to lay down h is mou nt , a nd himself to be di sq uali fied fo r causing a red flag. With h is sp iri t dampened a bi t, h e wen t on to finish th ird in the Scra tch main . Christian had some rough ridin g Fr ida y night. H is win over Sandona in the H andicap semi ca me from a last-minute lunge. In th e Handicap semi he had to la y it down beh ind a fallen Sandona, and had to do the same thing beh ind Pfetz ing in th e Handicap main. H e ended up fourth in both the H andicap and Scrat ch ma in. In th e H andi cap semi, Dennis Bransford took first a fte r Shawn McConnell was di squalified , having gone in side the pole. Bransford went on to win the H andicap main which had to be restarted tw ice because o f . downed riders. The Scratch conso la tion turned o u t to be a thrilling event. On th e sta rt, Gene Woods and Mike Faria went into turn one side by side; so close in fact , that Woods someh ow got his left foot tangl ed in th e rear of Faria's bike, between th e tire a nd frame, and they both came to a stop in turn.one. After several tens e minutes with bolt cutters and hacksaws, Woods was pulled free. Woods got back on his bike and, with his boot taped on, went off to wi n th e race. . Second Division heat wins by Tom Conrad, Ph il Harrnatuik, and Alan Davidson started the show back up after intermission. Conrad went on to win the Second Division main. The Third Division ha s its own problems with crashes, in cluding the loose bike of Rick Bloomgren doing "en does" in tu rn three after careening off the wall. A cornerman from the Hi-Siders club. Jimmy Anderson was nailed by a bike in turn four , while go in g out to assist a couple of riders down on the tra ck . He was sha ken up but was seen later, walking around the tra ck ar ea smiling.
