National Papers (Continuedfrom page 7) THEHUSDVARNA WH- IT'S FOR WINNING RACES. Terry Poov ey, wh o won th e recent H ouston short track, is a lso entered to try and make it tw o in a ro w in th e new adde d event. Bu t n o west coas t track has ever hosted back- toback National s on th e sa me weekend at th e sa me loca tion , suc h as th ey do in H ou s ton' a n d us ed to d o i n Indianapolis. Steve Eklund ap pea rs to be on o ne of h is "U p " yea rs an d wi ll be fresh from h is H o u sto n TT wi n. H e fi nished fourth la st yea r a t Ascot . H e'll be tough to bea t in thi s o ne. Steve is n ow th e a ll tim e TT winner wi th eig h t to hi s cre di t, incl ud ing th e 1979 Ascot jumper. In ta lking with Honda 's Steve Wise a t Daytona about th e co m in g Ascot TT, he stated that it was 50-50 as to whether he would ride or not. H e found out last year th at Ascot was not Houston and therefore his MX st yle a nd set-up wa s not as effective on the longer, faster track. H e said that there was no way h e would attempt it again on the MX bike but would consider it on one of the newer Honda models like T erry Poovey and Mike Kidd will be riding. Same for Mickey Fay, the rider that should be a bo u t ready to bang one across the line in first about Ascot time. Poo vey is perhaps the hottest rider at this time. His twin efforts at Houston and his three-in-a-row short track wins at Daytona will find him a threat in both Ascots and the short track at San jose. The night mile at Sacramento started in '79 and has produced a different winner each time. Mike Kidd , Hank Scott, jorgensen and Springsteen are the former front runners and all are entered for the night of the 16th. Picking a mile winner gets rougher each year , but Springsteen is no w the all time winner in this category wi th 12, including his" at-the-wire-win in the capital city in '82. The mi le a t San jose has come up with th ree different winners the last three times out. Steve Morehead borrowed a bike from Ricky Graham a year ago and won th e race. Like Springsteen, Morehead is a former ' number one miler for th e year but will have trouble getting th at lu ck y two times in a row. The Ascot half mile sh ou ld belong to Randy Goss, since he's won three of th e last four held at th e G arden a oval. Wh en Goss is on a t Ascot he ca n not be beaten. In th e sp ring event a year ago he was not on and wa s shoved back to a di stant sevent h . But did h e make up for it in th e cu rta in closer last fall ! Scotty Parker won his first m ajor half mile at Ascot last spring. The fenc e-buster from Michigan will be back and hard to beat, but watch Goss in th e early time trials and th e heat ra ce for the best indication o f things to come in th e 20-lap fin al. Honda is su p posed to have something brand new for the miles this year and they hav e a raft of V -twi n s in the line for '83. But th ey had nothing at Florida.for the dirt seri es, which means th ey wi ll be testing on th e miles in Nation al co m petition on ce again. Perhaps th ey will show up for th e five Frida y night Ascot non-N ati onal half mil es th at run most of the Friday nights whil e th e series is on th e coa st. _ __ _ Roxy Rockwood _ _ _ _ , With a record setting 1 consecutive National Enduro 3 Titles and this season's first three event victories at Q uicksilver.
