Tara nti no , mean while , had trouble out of th e gate, a nd was relegated to a ni n th p lace start. Da vis began clos ing on H opwood in the third lap , an d th e ' two battled it ou t handlebar to han d lebar for two laps. Davis even tua lly sq uee zed by on th e ou tside to take the lead . Whil e th is d icing was going on, Tarantino had been steadi ly picki ng o ff riders, ga in ing ground on th e leaders a t every turn. By th e tim e Da vis finall y took th e lead, Tara ntino had nestl ed in beh ind H opwood . Do ug Dubach's " new " '82 Suzuki took top . h onors in th e l2 5cc Pro class. T ed Brady (H o n) h ol esh ot th e first m o to an d built a 20-second lead in n o tim e. Dubach starte d m id-pack, but cleared o u t th e o ther riders within two laps. Brady 's lead , h ow ever , appeared ins urmou nta ble. It might have been, too , had hi s p iston not broken late in th e race. With no spare bike, Brady's racing was over for the day. Duba ch coa sted home for an easy victory over th e Yarn ahas of Pat Hubbs a nd Randy Yetto. The second m oto start ed with a cras h that took Dubach down in th e first corn er. H e pi cked himself up and took off in 10th place as Yett o, Hubbs. and T y Maddox (Suz) fought over the lead. Dubach di spat ch ed one rider after another until he held fourth place by th e six th lap. By th en ; Yett o had a sizeable lead over th e ot he rs. On th e eig h th lap , Dubach had taken Hubbs, and in th e ni nth , he sq ueezed by Madd ox for seco n d place, good enough for first pl ace.
