DAYTONA '83 --.--1 Ted Boody (12) and Terry Poovey (18) swapped positions in Thursday's event with Poovey taking the win and Boody padd ing his series points lead , Dan Bennett's trek from Oregon paid off as he topped the Junior/Novice combined prog ram at Memorial Stadium , Ricky Gra ham (1 ) slipped underneath Ted Boody (1 2 ) on the last lap of the Expert final at Barberville to take the win. Tim Mertens topped the f inal of the 500cc All American Shootout. Mertens led flag-to-flag , despite a restart. 28 Ra ndy Goss, to mention two, never made it out of their scratch hea ts. J im m y Filice gathered up the pole fo r the final on the 6-6 rider grid with a win in the first of four semis. Poo vey and S hobert ca rried thei r battle to the finish in sem i two with Poovey on top . Semi three saw Herndo n take the win with strong showings by R ozowicz and Farris to move them in to the program. Roger Crum p and Da ve Hebb ra n wheel-to-wheel in the fi nal semi, but a ttention was foc used on Steve 'Moreh ea d a n d his charge through traffic to snatch a transfer spot in the final turn. Poovey grabbed the immediate lead on the na rrow and slick groove and stayed on li ne like he was running o n a rail. H is o n ly p roblem came when he missed a shift a nd coasted a bit before find ing the righ t gear. This allowed Shobert and Filice to close up. Boody's start wa s good, but he got force d high in turn one and spent ti me fighting back th rough traffic. Cru mp we nt high in turn one on the start to avoid an accident and ended up last. Tuesday Dan Bennett's 3500 mile trek from Hillsboro, Oregon, paid off as the IS-year-o ld J un ior topped a fast Junior/Novice field in the opening short track round at Memorial Stadium. SI. Petersb urg Novice David Miller lost his cha nce at a Novice-only program win in Memorial Stadium after Monday's rainout, but faired well agains t the Ju niors, earni ng a front ro w start in the final and a fourth overa ll against more experienced competition. In the firs t semi, Sure-Fire/Richmond H -D / Bell sponsored Ron Art hur lin ed u p against Tampa / Volusia Novice winner Duane Duvall, but Arthur ru led turn one with Oklahoma 's R usty Miskovsky and John Parker in tow. Miskovsky 's Randy tu ned R&R Cycle /A llian ce Steel Honda took over for th e win on la p one. "This is my th ird year a t Daytona and the best I've ever done," said the husky steel worker. "Don' t forget my mom (Mary Louise); she has always been beh ind me wit h my racing." In semi number two, Do ug Chandler, w ho broke his foo t a t Tampa, after a promising start in the 'S2 Dirt Series, led all the way . Chandler wore a Suzuki MX jersey over his old lea th er s. "My new sponsors are Salina's Cyc1e/Kal-GardiBel-Ray / H iPoint and Out Front Pl at es," sa id the California rider. Ben n ett had his hands full with novice David Mi lle r in the third semi, but the junior's experience kept the novice at bay, to earn the pole for the final. "This isn't my bike. It blew a water pump," said Ben n ett. " Randy Green loa ned me his Pa nt h er Framed Honda and it ha ndles better than mi ne . I hate to give i t back." Virginia 's Tony H arwell advanced to the final with a third. Jimmy O liver was the only other novice in th e maIn. Arlington Honda/Oilzum/Simpson sponsored Charlie Orr gave the Texas fans a rush in semi fo ur with a flag-to- flag ro ute. The Irvin g na tive said after his sixth p lace in the final, "I was right on the Ohio guy (Doug Davis) but I knew I had to p ut it in under him, and I cou ldn 't do it." In th e main event, Bennett, Miskovsky, Davis, Orr, Andrews and John Parker a ll tried to wedge into tu rn . one together, leaving Mi ller on the cush ion and scram bling. " I must have been back to eighth or ninth," said Mi ller, "so I started passing 'em, one a t a time," Bennett's borrowed machi ne stretched the lead and i t was Miskovsky who fel t the pressu re of C handler. " I tried several passes but actuall y got h im in the last turn ," said Chandler. Miller completed a d ramatic comeback to fo urth on an air-cooled Honda. His "coach" Bill y Labrie said, "David really showed his abi lity tonight. He made a m ista ke in the first turn, bu t came back strong and made up for it ."> 'Ii Bennett beamed as Poochie Cox draped the checkered flag o n his bi ke and refe ree Freddie Ephrem co ngratu lated h im . Grand Nationa l Champion Ricky Gra ham passed Ted Boody on the last lap to win the Dayton a Busch Half Mi le, th e third round of the Daytona Dirt Track Seri es at Volusia County Speedway.
