Dan Mu ller on a new 495 KTM . . Th is was th e first Idaho desert even t of th e yea r, a nd th e Desert Rats wa nted a good location. ThevIound it, in a secluded a rea ni ck-named "Sa nd City." Th e 3 1-m ile course featured sand, sa nd , and more sand, most or it in big, wide wash es. There were no ro ck s, a rare commodity indeed in Idaho, an d the R a ts were duly rew arded with 109 riders . Everyone wa s pumped right up until th e rider's meeting, when th e main problem of th e day reared its h ead; rain , lo ts or rain . As th e meeting ended , th e racers g lu m ly pushed th eir mounts to th e sta rti ng line, amidst rain, wind, lightning , and tornados. Wh en th e start banner dropped, ano ther factor su rfaced - horsepow er ! Wi th so much sa n dy terrain, and wet groun d to boot, th e 50-pl us horsepower Ope n bikes were i n heaven. Front ru nners over th e smokebom b hi ll incl uded Dillon , C urt H ar p ha m (490 Maico) a nd M uller. As th e riders bega n to strin g out, th e visibi litv deteriorated even m ore wi th snowflakes th e size o f si lver dollars, a nd a strong, nasty northern wind. At the end of th e fir st la p , the order remai n ed Dill on , Ha rp ham a n d Mu ller . bu t a scr eami ng pack or250s. incl udi ng Bo b Ca rlberg ( H u s), H ow ar d P ickett (Ya m), a nd Dan Lees (H us) were close behind. Oregon star, Bill Dow ers. had moved h is 500 Husky up a s well after su fferi ng from a poor sta rt a nd broth er Mark Dower s was ru n n in g in th e top 10 with hi s trusty 1979250 Husky. About midway through the seco nd lap, th e weather cleared u p and th e ra cers co u ld co ncentra te on racing. Dillon hooked up an d h eld the lead to the fini sh . Harpham 's mount threw a ch ain a nd h e DNF, leav ing seco nd overa ll to Muller. Pi ck ett Iin a llv fo ugh t p as t th e Huskys o r Lees, Ca rlberg. a nd th e Dowers bo ys to finish th ird o vera ll , first 250. Ex treme ly imp ress ive wa s Ca rlberg's fifth overa ll fini sh. Carlberg hadn ' t raced since 1978, and has just recently sta rt ed ridin g again. Look for so me great rid es in th e fu ture from this guy. Another fabulous performance wa s turned in by Reed Bright (495 KTM ). Reed is in th e m idst of a co me -back , an d hasn 't ra ced much since 1978 either. His seventh overall proved that he will be tough as well. Other noteworthy rides were top novice riders R ick Dooms (250 Hon), and R ick Hill (490 Yam ). Dooms was th e first Novice. at 11th overall . Hill won th e Open Novice class, and was 13th overall. Hill's ride was really sli ck, as h e hadn't entered a ra ce since 1980. With so much sand, one had to feel a little sorry for the 125s. but Steve Henry (KTM ) stomped o n a bunch o f bi g bikes, as h e ro lled in to th e finish in 12th overall, first 125cc Exper t. Just beh ind Steve, the to p 125cc Novices ra ced LO the fini sh ch u te. Chuck Brewer (Kaw) a nd J eff Mill er (Hon) came in side by sid e, wi th th e win going LO Brew er by a bo u t a foo t! CA, FEB. 27 Spillway Park held their second m oto cross race under n ew ow ne rshi p last Sunday with more than 50 riders showin g up . in wet weather to com pe te. In the Min i division G arv R iekk i took tw o o vera ll win s to cap tu re the Expert division w hile Todd York was victorio us in th e Int erm edi ate class. T he Min i Ju nior cla ss wa s wo n by R ussell P ryor who fi nish ed th e day with a to tal o r th ree. Fin ish ing seco nd , a lso wi th a to tal of th ree, but w ith a p oorer fini sh in the second m oto, was , Set h Paulsen . T h ird in th e Min i Jun ior class went to Scott Dubrul with a six-poin t tot al. Even t number two co m bi ned th e 250cc a n d Open Jun iors. The 250cc Junior class wa s won byKen McAll ister who to talled two p oints for th e da y. Seco nd place went to Brett Butterfield with a fou r-point total a nd third wa s Vic Scarbrough wi th six points. T he O pen Jun iors we re topped by Ken Syrner who sco red a two- point tot a l, with Mark Moore finishing seco nd with a four-point total a nd Dwayn e Palmer co m in g in th ird with a to tal o f six points. Chuck Walker LOok ba ck-so-ba ck wins in th e 250cc Intermediate di vision to card a tw o -point tot al a nd first pla ce in his d ivi sion. Mike Pryor fini shed seco n d in both motos to co me up with a four-point total, which meant that their Iinish in th e second mota determined their placing for th e da y. When th e smoke cleared it wa s Jim Keese first, Rob Martindale second and Do n Truhitte third. T he 125ccJuniord ivision was won by Jeff Sills who finis hed second in th e first moto and first in the second moto to finish th e day with a threepoint tota l. It looked like Phil Butler would be the rider to beat in th e class a fter he finished first in the first m oto, But in th e seco nd round Bu tler dumped hi s m ach ine and killed th e engi ne whi le tr ying LO pass Sill s Ior th e lead. By th e tim e Butler g o t resta rte d h e was down a lap a nd had to sett le for third pl ace overa ll with a six-point tot al.
