Ca rson made several more tri es to wrest the lead from Bigelow , but still fin ished runner-u p with Surwall th ird and Canadian Terry H o foss (Yam ) in fourt h. Anothe r Ca nadia n, Serge Grego ire (Yam) took co ntrol o f th e seco nd q uart er -fin al. Dan Wallace (Han ) gra bbed th e lead for a short time o n the third lap, o n ly to have Gregoire return the favor by o u t-di sta nci ng Wallace on a jump. G regoire held th e lead to the fini sh , wh ere Wallach fell several feet short of ca tch in g him a t the scoring ch ut e. Dean Cates fin ished in third, with Andy Sta cy (H us) in fourth. Sem i-f inals just as he had done in hi s heat race , Hanna h put his Honda out fro nt aga in in the first semi-fina l event . Phi l Larson, also on a Honda, hel d second momentarilv unti l Bail ev made his move for the 'position . johnny O 'Mara suffered from a mid -pack sta rt a nd was rapid ly moving up. H onda-mounted Ph il Larson wa s holding onto thi rd pl a ce. O 'Ma ra deci ded it was time to mak e a move, so he took over co nt ro l o f second from Bailev. The final fin ish ing order was Hannah , O 'Mara, Ba iley an d La rson . The Honda show was beginni ng to form . Goat Br eker g ra b bed the fir st posi tion in th e secon d sem i-fina l in sho rt order. Yam aha teamma tes Broc Glover a nd Ri cky joh nso n fill ed o u t the seco nd a nd th ird spo ts. j ohnson attempted to pa ss G lover on th e third lap, bu t his efforts were unfruitful. On the final lap , joh nson o nce agai n ma de a n effort to pa ss Gl over, a nd wh en G lover d ropped it mome nta ri ly, he was successfu l. At the en d o f the sem i it wa s Breker , j ohnson , Gl over and Alan King (Su z). Consolation The consolation race moved the top four finishers into the final event. Tom Ben olk in (H o n) holeshot the start, but his lead wa s short-liv ed . Steve Marti n (H a n) gained con tro l before the next corner, with Mike Tripes (H on ) in the third position. Clint Hard ick displaced Tripes on the third lap, while Benolkin was holding his d istan ce from frontrunning Martin . Th e final tall y in the last preliminary event sho wed Martin I n first, followed by Benolkin , H ardi ck, the n Tripes. Fi na l Befor e th e start o f the fina l event. a parade lap wa s held to g ive the fa ns in attendance a chance to see their favorites in slow motion . Seeming as if he kn ew someth in g, Hannah was the fir st to ro ll on to the tra ck . From th e sou n d o f the crowd, Hannah had a very healthy foll owin g in the sta nds. Fo llowing a pa tte rn he ha d set earlier in the day. Hannah forged his way to the first co rner in the num ber one posi tio n, aboard hi s H onda RT 3 250cc wo rks bike. As the sa nd on turn one sett led, the Honda con nec tion ha d a lready been form ed - H annah was fo llo wed by fell ow T eam Honda members O'Ma ra a nd Bail ev. Barnett ha d grabbed fou rt h position , wit h G oat Breker in fifth. H annah conti n ued to slo wlv build u p hi s lead o ver O 'Mara , but 'nea rly lost it with a sta lled motor on the . th ird lap. T he top five positions rem ained the same through th e en d of the third lap. On lap four of th e l2-lap a ffair, Glover moved ahe ad of Breker to secu re th e fifth spot. T ea m Honda co n tin ued to hold its deadl ock o n the first th ree positions. Ha n na h co nt inued h is ch a rge, wh ich deligh ted th e fans. T he top five posi tions rema ined the same u ntil the co ncl usion of the event . with Ha nnah stretch ing his lead even mo re. Ri cky joh nson , Goa t Breker .
