PRODUCT EVALUATION Smith Turbo Goggles Smit h has only recently started selling their goggles in the motorcycle market, but they have years of experience in the ski goggle ind ustry . Sm ith has put their know how to work and provided a solu tion, , albeit a somewhat expensive solu tion , to th e ag e old p roblem of goggle fogging. Sm ith Turbo goggles have a tiny electric fa n built into the top of · the frame tha t draws its power from a small battery pack on the strap. Both the motor and th e power pack are unobtrusive. The toughest test for a goggle that claims to be fog fre e is a cold and d am p night m otocross and an out-ofshape human type form. We found this cond ition at Corona (CA) Ra cewa y. Turbos have vents in th front that make use of the fan unnecessa ry, in the worst conidtions , as long as th e cycle is moving at any speed at all . Unfor tunately, som etimes you hav e to stop. At the start, for insta nce. T he fan cleared up the fog quickly and wor ked as adv ertised. The only way to tell when the fan is on (whe n your bik e is ru n ning) is to see whether you have fog or no t (or remember which way th e switc h is on). An adde d plus is tha t the goggles fit easil y over glasses and wer e more comfortable than a ny our tester ha d ever worn . W e have seen pictures of these goggles inside a Bell Moto III , they d o go in but it is difficult. The frames are la rge, which accounts for their extreme comfort, bu t the nose foam had to be trim me d even to ge t them u nder an open- face d halmet and let the wearer breathe. For wea rers of glasses, the Turbos would probably be worth the money with out th e fan . For those who ride a lot of night motocross or frost y desert or end u ros, th ey could be just the ticket. Make sure they fit inside your helmet and that your dealer is willing to stock the correct lens since the retail price of $64.95 is substantial.
