MAR. 6 Today was a soggy Sunday at DeAnza Cycle Park. and Brian Beck (Yam ) made the best of it by slippin' and slidin' his way to victory in th e Min i Beginner class with a I- I tally. Beck roos ted to th e front of the field a t th e start of moto o ne ahead of Adam Fi tzgera ld (H on ) and Kell y Pich el (Yam) . But early in the race. .both Fi tzgerald a n d P ich el dropped ou t hand in g th e seco n d 'a nd th ird spot over to Willis Drak e (Yam ) and Er ic Bisbee (Yam). Midway through th e m ot o , Beck enjoyed a co mforta ble lead. wh ich h e h eld for th e rest of th e race. Dr ake took second fo llow ed by Bisbee. Fitzgeral d grabbed the seco n d moto holeshot j ust in front of Beck. a nd Pichel. Fitzgera ld went down during the first la p . wh ich gave first a nd seco n d to Beck and Pichel. Fitzgerald recovered in th ird . Lap by lap, Beck en la rged a lead that took h im to th e checkered flag first. Seco nd went to Pich e! followed by Fitzgerald. Bisbee and Dra ke. In th e 250cc Beginner class. Robbie Dunham (Suz) went home with the gol d a fter jam mi ng to a flaw less I- I score. Georg e Saver took th e win in th e 500cc Stock class with Don Orasco placing seco nd at h is first hillclimb. Posca cruises to victory at Corona MX By Kit Palmer CO RONA, CA. MA R. 4 J o h n Posca (Ya m) didn't win a moto, but h e did win the overa ll in th e 125cc No vice class tonight at Corona Racewa y. Posca used two co nsisten t second place finishes to edge seco nd place fin ish er Mike Maga llanes (Ya m) . Lop era , meanwhile, ran away with th e win followed by Po sca arid Scnrieider . Magallanes stole the hol esh o t at th e start of mota two wh ile Lopera, Osborn, Sch neider and Posca pursued. On the first lap Lopera went down, dropping back to fo urt h . Two laps la ter Schneider slipped by Mansfiel d for second. Bu t. a few turns lat er, Schneider sl id-out, losin g two positions . Corona night MX: Gergen jams By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, FEB . 28 Suzuki-mounted Tom Gergen used a flawless I- I co m bination to capture th e win in to night' s 250cc Novice class a t Corona Raceway. When the p ack exited th e first turn for the start of moto o ne. Ge rge ns ha d a sligh t lead over Eric Flem in g (Yam ), J oe Steffen (Yam ). T . Kidd (Han) and P aul Schm id t (H a n ). By lap two Kidd took over the third spot after passing Steffen. Kidd th en stuffed-i t under Fleming to gai n co ntrol of second on the next lap . For the remai ni ng port ion of the mo to , Kidd tried to reel in the leader, Gergen, but th e Suzuki pi lot had developed enough of a cush io n to hold on for the win. Kidd took second followed by Fleming, Steffen and Schmidt. . Brian Alexander (Ya m) shot 10 the front of th e pack at th e start of the second moto while Flem in g, Kidd and Mi ke Allen (Yam) wa tched from behind. Way back in seventh. by the end of the first la p , was Gergen . However. Gergen h eld the th rottle wide-o pen and p icked off o ne r ider a t a time befo re captu ring th e lead on th e last lap. Alexa nder took a frustra tin g seco nd wh ile th ird a nd fou rth went to Kidd a nd Flemin g. In the 60cc jun ior Cycle cl ass it was th e 1:1 co mbina tion by H on da 's J a so n Collier that ca p tu red th e win . In moto o ne Co llier grab bed th e hol esh ot a head of Brandon Spe rli ng (Kaw) a nd Dana Wiggins (Han ). Wiggins had control of the second spot by the end of the seco nd lap. However. Collier's slight lead over Wiggi ns was enough to hold him th rough th e end of th e ra ce. Wiggi ns took second followed by Sperling. Jacob T . Swain (Kaw) and Robert Naber (Suz). Collier stole the hol es hot only inches a head of Wiggins and Sperli ng; he thenproceeded to run away wit h the second rnoto victory. Seco nd weru to Wiggins while third went to Sperl ing. Fowler took the 125cc Stoc k and Modified Expert classes over Mitch Palmer (Han ) a nd Chris Sw ift (Yam) , respectivel y. This ne w Expe rt continues to be the man to beat in 1983. He's very smooth and very fa st . Fowler looks like the guy to dethrone Mitch Palmer for the number one 125cc Expe rt p late. The Min i classes were once again a Kawasa ki benefit as Cory Falter swept the 105s and the Stock Experts. j oh n Conney grabbed th e Modifieds. In the Intermediates it wa s all j o h n Flores (Ka w) in a four for four blast in the Stocks and Modifieds. In th e 12-16 Novices. Kawasak ia ns Bryon Pow ell and j oey Men doza led th e way with Powell going two for two ove r Men doza in th e Stoc ks. Mendoza too k a close tie- brea ker in the Modi fieds .
