At 10:00 a. m., th e ba nner dropped, th e race started and so did th e ra in . It was co ld and windy with rain co min g down like the monsoons. At the bo m b Stearns ha d been second b u t took a bad trail a n d dropped to fo urth . Downhill Alexander, one of ou r best Open Ama teurs , was ru n ni n g fifth. Art Kna p p was first Open Sen ior to come by with By the time the Novi ce/ Beginner rac e started, the rain had been co ming down h ar d for about 25 minutes. T hese rider s were cold a n d wet, but not one was seen leavin g th e starti ng line. After the bomb, 250cc Novice Greg Johnston was in th e lead. Open rider George Scott Jr. (Yam) came in seco n d. Third was Beg in ner Vet Bo b Heron, first C bike was Novice J o h n Stoffel at fourth. Back with the leaders, Stearns and Cra ndall were dicing for the lead. After th e first time around the 38mile course, Cranda ll was in the lead. Seco nd was Stearns. Leaving the pi ts first was Stea rns as Cranda ll decided to try some clea n goggles, ma king h is pit sto p a little lo nger. T hrough a t th ird wa s Chuck Mill er (Hon). Chuck was moving up after a bad sta rt dea d la st o ££ th e li ne. Fourth was first 250 rider McCasland. Dave Cha se was havin g a gr eat ride today: h is Sh amrock co lo rs came through at fifth. Coming through at sixth was Bob Rutten with Cory T im ms seventh . On th e la st loop Crandall ha d a bad ge t-off, ending h is final bid for the lead. Miller was starti ng to put some pressure on lea der Stearns. About halfway around. Miller picked up two fla t tires; tha t en ded his chal-len ge for the lead. A few miles ou t from the finish, Stea rns ran o ut o f gas , but lu ckil y he h ad extra gas wi th him. While he stopped to refuel. Miller came cruising by. Stearns q uic kly regained the lead and went on for the fin ish . At the checkered, the well- ma tched pair of Stea rns and Ya maha took a well-earned first overall. Stearns was ha ppy to be back with Yamaha and very happy with h is win . H e wa nted to thank Mo ntclai r Yama ha , th e' C hec kers M.C. a nd Bruce O gil vie. Seco nd was Ch uck Miller. His two flat tires did n't sto p Chuck fro m hav- . ing a really fu n ri de in th e rain. Both Stearns an d Miller lik ed th e cou rse and especially the unusua l chance to race th e desert in the rain. A very wet an d co ld H o wa rd McCas la n d too k th ird overall a nd first 250cc today. Bo b R utten pulled in for a fourth . Dave Chase took fifth overall. Bill Saltzman , sh ow ing what Vets are ma de of , took the six th spot and with ita first in the Vet Open class. In for the lucky seventh overall place and first Open Amateur was D. Alexander. Steve Zollinger had a good ride toda y, co ming in a t eig ht h and seco nd 250cc. An other o f o ur best Vet riders, Richard Jackson, cam e in ninth overa ll a nd second Open Vet. Honoring 10th place was T ed Hunnicutt. Chuck Pett igrew had a su per race tod ay an d work ed his wa y up to l l th overall and first C bike. First Woman to fin ish this challenging course was Diane Holeman. First Novice girl was Vick y Sco tt. First overall Novice was Greg Johnston on his 250cc. Steve Williams was second and firs t Open Novice to finish. First overa ll Beginner was Chris Hightower on hi s 390 Husky. Second was Bill Peterson. Two Beginners very much worth mentioning were Gentry J ohrs who took first Mini. Beginner James Summers had trouble on the downhill, but fin ished this tough race pretty happy with h is ride. H arden didn 't get th e best of starts, but those th at did were n't able to take advantage o f th em. Leon Livin gston bai led in th e hassle, Pau l Eddy squeaked h is 250cc a nd both ra llied only to go down th e. wr ong wash near check four, takin g Brian San ders with them. " We lost a bou t three- IOths of a mil e before goi ng back," said Eddy. H arden h ad put a good distan ce betw een all but Ma rty Smith. Into home check, H arden 's Husky led Smi th's Cagiva by one minute. Two minutes later came Li vin gston. Craig Corda came in on a fla t tha t took h im o u t of the race . Ne xt was num ber o ne l25cc Ed Fo land with Brian San ders and Pa ul Eddy on his fender. Into lap two , Harden was smokin' it. Into the straight three-quarter of a mile from home check, Harden turned the big Hu sk y loo se. Sm ith wa s p ush in ' it when he co n nected with a ro ck. He bailed hard leaving him with a sore neck and brand new Ca giva tracks over hi s bod y. In to th e third lap Harden was in a class of his ow n. Foland broke a link bolt, taking him out, whi le Bob Ben diced with Jamie Tucker for the 125cc ranks. "I caught Tucker about three mil es from home check and we fo u gh t it ," said Bell. "Tucker had been first o u t o f the pit and I didn't pass h im for good till the dry la ke." Meanwhile, Harde n put seven minu tes on Livingston by the checkered flag. Eddy pulled in three minutes la ter for third, Brian Sa nders was fourth a nd Dale Conner fifth. Bell took the l 25cc Experts with Ro y Basin first l25cc Novi ce, Jeff Ben nett first 250cc Novice a nd Gent leman Ed Mundy sewed u p th e Vet's win .
