with. He's real cons istent, and you kn ow wha t he's goin g to do. H e doesn't mak e an y blat ant moves th at mig ht effect you , p u t you in tro u ble. Fredd ie Spencer and Mich ael Baldwin ride the same wa y as Ken n y Roberts, th ey ride reall y hard. I ri de that way too if it's a sho rt race, say, 75 mi les. I th ink Daytona is the exception, being 200 mil es. Bu t I th in k that Michael and Fredd ie on the Hondas will ride hard, ri ght o ff th e bat. Freddie will be o n a NS500, bu t ma ybe it will be bigger th an that, like 65Occ, a nd ma ybe th e Yama has of Kenny and Eddie will be bigger than 500, too . I know Suzuki made some 680s o u t of 500s and th ey had a lot of problems because th e low er ends just couldn' t tak e the horsepower from the .ex tra displacem ent. I think it tak es th e longevit y out of th e motorcycle if th ey put 650cc top ends on 500cc-based low er ends, but with Yamaha and Honda th e on ly wa y 3._FIJIR "To prepare the airfilter, p our foam filter oil on the elem en t and satu rate co mplete - then wring out completely. lin e the co ntact edge ofthefilter with clean grease to ensure a perf sea l andp revent ect dirtfrom slipp ing arou nd the edge." Paul Turner - Team Honda R&D mechanic. we'll ever know how big the bike really are is if th ey just come ou t a nd tell us or tear th em do wn a nd ho w us. Mich ael, I g uess, will be on an FWS V-4, a nd th at motorcycle has all the capa bilities needed to wi n. I thi n k th is year th ey will have thei r act together o n the tire problem. They had basicall y very few fla ws with th e mo to rcycle last year, I th ink o n ly o ne DNF, maybe two , half a race a t Laguna and then Elkhart Lak e. No doubt abo ut it. the FWS a nd Mich ael wi ll be a rea l co ntender. In fact I thi n k I would pu t Mich ael as the nu m ber o ne co ntender as far as the machin ery he's riding. th e ca pa bil ity of th e rider, and what th eir past record has been , the ir track record. H onda will a lso ha ve Ron Haslam and Mar co Lucchinelli but it 's th eir first race a t Daytona , and it's different. I heard that Mr. Haslam had gone very well th ere in tests last year Eric Crip p a - Multi-tim e Na tional & De Na tio ns MX Champion m echanic, n ow Stet'e Martin 's m echanic. a nd I would give Ron a real good chance . H e's a real hard go-gett er. He likes to ride mo tor cycles. Roberto P ietri will be riding H ondas ag a in th is yea r a nd he had a very good show last year. He's a good exam p le of m y theory a bo u t longevity a nd not havin g to do 2:04s to win the race or do wel l. H e fini shed thi rd in 1982 and did some good tim es. H e'll ha ve a good cha nce if his ride . works out a ll right. Nick Richi ch i will be rig h t there. riding a Yamaha. Yamaha has won th e la st nine or 10 years now. so th ey definitely have a go od track record a t Daytona. I thin k that th e eq uip me nt the factories are putting together is sta rt ing to overco me th e Yam aha do mina nce, but Nick was 10th last year without any front brakes, so he'll be there. It will be tougher th an ever for Yam ah a TZ750 riders this year, but p riva teers ca n still do well with th e y ou 're got tbe a m , use so m e on tbe kick sta rt p irot to make sure it doesn 't lock up with dirt andgrit. Ri chard Schlachter, for example. Ri chie is a lways going to be a front runner as long as he get s everyth ing pr epared well , he's another of those co ns isten t riders. He h as to get his ride togethe r first, a nd at this particular time it 's up in th e air o n what he's go ing to do. Joh n Bett en court, if he has a 200 ride. Johnny's been to Daytona quite a few times, he kn ow s th e place. H e's comi ng off a n accident, and I kno w wha t th at ca n do to yo u. It has an effect on yo u for th e first race and the n aft er that you forget a bou t it. So I think we'll just have to see how he does, or if he rides at all. H e may only ride his Honda Su perbike and not en ter th e 200. I heard tha t Thad Wol ff is supposed to ride the works Suzuki I rode at Suzuka la st year, and I think th at Thad has the possibilities of doing good. It will be a new motorcycle for him, but Matsu Matsuzawa, who set up the deal through friends in Japan. has been working on those motorcycle s for a long time. I think they'll have the longevity, but it 's hard to say. Thad sometimes is up and sometimes he 's down. H e's done very well a t some rac e tra cks and then the year before last he fell off in the first couple o£ laps at Daytona. I'm up in the a ir about how Thad will do . Harry Klinzmann's th e same wa y. Sometimes Harry's really together and sometimes he's not. It depends a lot on what he rides. I hear he ma y ride his Raceerafters Kawasaki in the 200 or ma ybe a TZ750 built by Carter Fisher. but Harry had trouble with th e Yam aha in an AFM race a t Wil· low Springs a couple o £weeks ago. I think H arry can fin ish up h igh if every thing works well for him. If Bru ce Hammer was still riding, he'd be one position a hea d o£H arry , going by their races last year. Dan Chivington needs to get a good ride. If Danny had a good ride . Danny could be really good. H e just needs the opportunity to get on a good motorcycle , a nd I don 't even know i£ he has a bik e at a ll for Daytona. There are a lot of other guys who could do well : Steve Ba ron, Norm Smyser. Doug Brauneck, Uri Berg' baum, Steve Gervais. Mark Homchick (If he 's riding for Paul Dahmen again. I think he could be really good i£ he co uld concentrate on racing. But he's got his other job working for Cycle and I think that takes away from hi s racing effort. ), and Rich Chambers. All on Yamaha TZ750s. Jimmy Fil ice, i£ he has his Yamaha TZSoo engine. Steve Wise on an FWS or even an air-cooled Honda. Dav id Aldana could win it, and was racing Singleton for the lead one year when his bike broke, ·but I'm not sure David has a ride. Everybody in the top 20 qualifiers at Da ytona has a very good chance to win, because the race is so long. I' ve seen Geoff Perry throw a chain when leading two laps from the end. I' ve seen Ni xo n out in the . lead and fall off , sa me wi th Lansavouri and McLaughlin one year. As long as you 'rg in th e hunt, as long as you' re doing 2:l0s and below you've go t a good cha nce of winning the race. T he Superbik e race is a different matter. It's a sp rin t race even th ough it's 100 m iles long. T here's a new Iactor this year in that th e bik es are limited to 750cc wi th less fram e modification allowed. My Kawasaki is on Iy.26 pounds ligh terthan the 1025cc Superbikes we rode last year , but it reels a lot lighter. It 's much easier for me to maneuver and I' m sure that all th e factory riders will rind that same th ing true. I think that the people who are coming into Superbikes from 250s will have a little easier time making the transition than if they. J 17.
