In th e 250s, it was a " red ro m p " with th e top five positi ons being fill ed by H ondas. Ap ach e West's Scott Stall ard and teammate R ick Nag le netted th e top spots behind Dircks. Th e 125cc Ama teur stock class had a well -filled pa ck of 13 in the-first moto , but bik e problem s befell a lmo st half th e rid ers . Only seven of th e riders made it for the seco nd round wi th five a ble to be scored overa ll. Sco tt Duv a ll had th e most consistent ride, with a I-2 fini sh . In th e fir st m ot o Duvall led Brian H iggins a nd Art Rose o u t o f th e fir st turn. Three lap s down , Duvall and Higgins had pulled a wa y from th e rest. Dave T ownsend began to cra n k u p hi s Yam aha , moving quickl y through th e pack aft er his medi ocre start. By th e h alfway point, he had both Duvall and Higgins in hi s sight. Townsend 's gai ni ng momen tum propelled him pa st Higgins for seco nd, but he got bent ou t of shape aft er th e pass and dropped down a nd out, taking a DNF. D uval l cru ised in th e lead , wit h Higgins motoring beh ind. Rob O lsen overtook Rose in th e last two laps, for a third place fin ish. Noticeabl y mi ssing in th e seco nd round lineup were Higgin s, Ol sen a nd Rose. Townsend, unable to net a ny overall fini sh with his first moto DNF, was very not iceable, sho wing up right behind Ron Fi el ds a nd Duvall off th e start. By th e third lap he had put awa y Duva ll to p ressure th e leader Fields. An other lap a nd th e lead was his; a half a lap la ter Duva ll slid by Fields for second.
