Bartel best at Perris D-37 ST By Maureen Lee PERRIS, CA, FEB. 12 The Lightweights hosted district riders to a shan track at Perris Saturday evening; ' the track looked real good and held 20 up well - almost to the end of the evening. . O ne of the best races of the evening was in th e Veterans cla ss in th e third round . Michael Mors e won the first two. but was DNF for the night. Bill Bartels had been firmly tucked in second place for th e first two and then shot off with the win in th e th ird . "T he race" was between Ken Barrow and Mike Hart. Ken came in with a 6-6 and Mik e with a 5-5, but th ey really got to pushing in the third heat, going much quicker and really fighting it out for second and third. Mike got second, eventually, after they swapped it back and forth for more than four laps, and the two men had no th ing but excited shout s of glee over each other 's performances when they pulled off their helmets and started thumping on each other's shoulders in the pits. Some of the jelly bean brigade don 't get that excited over racing.! Sources told us their turnout was down because Corona had elected to run that evening, but there were still enough on hand to make two good Money races out of it. A few had bike problems. Chris Ca n no n couldn 't keep it running right in the 250cc class. Rob Hassey had tro ubles too, and at the end it was Roger Thompson and Curtis Cannon running all by themselves in the second round. Chris Cannon got back in the last round and chased Roger and Curtis around some more. In th e500cc Money, Chris Cannon went out fron t on th e start of all three heats, running hard as usual. But up would come Roger Thompson and finally find an opening to get by. The best tussle out of all of them was in th e fin al round. It led off Chris Cannon, then Curtis Cannon, Dan Kane and Thompson. Thompson kept on working away as they went 'round and 'round. He was breathing right on Chris's back , and Curtis lost some ground when he overslid a turn. The finish flags were in th e starter's hand when Roger found a little place on the inside of Chris a nd slid through. Cannon tried hard to get him back, and they ran side by side with a nice little bit of clean blocking going on when Roger got a bit of an edge over his frie nd and wasn't about to give it up. All the Mini friends were back out for the beginning of the season. The one lone 125cc in the group, ridden by Scott Brown , did very well , but others who caught the eye were th e Windham brothers, Dan and Donald (District 37 always has a pair of brothers moving on up in the wheel tracks of the Scotts and now the Cannons) a nd th ere was another new face - Dustin Evans wh o signed in Beginner but looked too good. He's a Minimotocrosser with a factory ride...well , Steve Wise didn't sign up Novice when he rode short track at the Astrodome, even if he was heavy in mo tocross experience only! Experts are never Begi n ners. In the 250cc Novice class it was Ron Wood with three straight wins, but Don Ambrose and Ken Ba rro w had a whale of a race between themselves. In 250cc Junior-Expert, Curtis Cannon won overall wi th a 1-3-1 over Danny Perkins' 2-1-2, the "spoiler" between the two Experts was Bru ce Nordstrom with 4-2-3. Results MINI COM BO: 1.
