(Left to right) Bailey and Miss Wrangler enjoy. Hannah seems unsure. Miss Miller sneaks in a plug. while Ward catches his breath. 8 Ward held on the gas, stuffed into the hay bales in the turn before, and went by King for good. Holley then began to feel the pressure from Ward. Holley's front wheel washed for the smallest moment in the first turn and Ward was into fourth. Ward went wide into the turn before the finish and went by Martin, who said later, "We've been doing a lot of work on our production bikes, but I didn't realize they were working that well (speaking of his and Keylon's starts). I got to thinking about how I was doing and my arms pumped up. I was just surviving." Martin gave it a good try when King made a bid for fourth. Two of Supercrosses' biggest riders were side by side for three turns before King earned the clear advantage. Hannah and Bailey proceeded to the flag, with Hannah lapping up to 10th. Ward was third, followed by King , Martin, Holley and Barnett. Barnett moved up' rapidly in the late laps when other riders tired. Hannah said of the race, "All it took was a holeshot, Honda gave me that." Bailey anticipated the question, " Yes, I'm pumped." Bailey kept the series lead by one point. Ward was unaware of his final position till afterthe fact, "I had a good jump and held it to the turn. If I had been on the inside I would have had the holeshot, but some riders came across and I rode along the haybales. I just saw three riders ahead of me and passed them. I didn't know I was third till I was riding back to the pits:' Top Yamaha and top privateer honors went to Holley who quipped, "You know what to say now don't you - Jim Holley, King .o f the Privateers!" Hannah's win was a come-from-behind win, made necessary when he slowed to avoid a terrifying first turn crash that started the electrifying final. Jeff Ward had his works Kawasaki in position for the holeshot when it took a bad bounce going into the first turn. He rode the front wheel deep into the turn, but got turned before the hay bales. It was too late as the replay showed Danny Chandler going down in evasive action and taking out Ward's rear wheel. The camera angle made it look as if Chandler may have been hit from behind also, but no other riders could be identified. Ward, Glover and Howerton went over the bank, and Alan King ended up on top of Magoo with Magoo's works Honda on top of him runnig wide open. Ward and Glover were up quickly and tried to return to the race. Glover had the choice· of running over a paramedic or Chandler, who was still in the track. Glover intimidated the women out of the way and most returned to action. Howerton and Magoo were out for the night. Some improvements were made to the track, but the track was still a major source of complaint. Too small, too fast and no place to pass were the major comments. Attendance for the second night was 35,840. Heats Alternate motos had to run before the heats, and most of the entrants again played supporting roles as Yamaha's Donnie Cantaloupi and Lechien divided the moto wins between them in the same fashion as the previous night. Cantaloupi won over Suzuki support rider Rick Ryan and Yamaha support rider Todd Peterson. Lechien topped Team Tamm's Mike Shoemaker and Canada's Jari Heinonen. Two of motocross racing's tallest, Bailey and Yamaha's Mike Bell, led Honda rider Jim Tarantino, Warren Reid and Billy Liles, on a works Kawasaki, at the completion of the first lap of heat one. As a matter of fact, they led the same people in the same order at the completion of the last lap. Bell closed on Bailey, but they held position. Ron Lechien was slicing his works Yamaha through the pack and caught Peterson, but after dicing for a lap, Peterson .did not come around. Lechien took sixth and Bill Grossi's Maico was the last rider direct to the semi . Hannah led a four-way Honda blitz of heat two . He picked up the holeshot over Breker, Martin, Howerton, Erik Kehoe and John O'Mara. Howerton was the only rider not on a Honda. Four laps into the race Johnny 0' lept out onto the start straight ahead of Howerton. He closed on Martin, but the order remained Hannah, Breker, Martin and O'Mara. Heinonen took seventh and the final direct transfer from this heat. A special bigger-than-normal Suzuki slipped Alan King into the record books in heat three. King took his first Supercross heat win after an all-out war with his Suzuki teammates Mark Barnett and Scott Burnworth. The trio pulled a three-way holeshot and the three were not seen again by the pack, until Yamaha support rider Jim Holley started to reel in Burnworth at the end of the heat. Barnett passed King and caught Burnworth, but when they came back around King was in front. He and Barnett tore up the track, but King hung tough for the win. Broc Glover, Ward and Phil Larson were the leaders of heat four over Keylon, Chandler and Clint Hardick on a Suzuki. The order stayed that ~ay until Glover dropped his bike on lap two. Ward went to the lead, Larson to second and Glover to third. Chuck Sun moved to seventh on his Maico and the race was essentially over. Ryan and Jim Anderson had their grasps on the transfers out of the first quarter-final from start to finish. Team Tarnrn's Dean Cates did the same in the last quarter-final, but fell in the last turn, which gave the transfers to Moto-X Fox/WD-40/ Yamaha rider Steve Burdette and Cates' teammate Shoemaker. Semis Bellied the first semi over O'Mara, Breker, Reid, Benolkin and Bailey. Hannah and Howerton were not in the top eight on lap one. O'Mara got Bell going onto the start straight on the fourth lap. Bailey moved to fifth and Hannah to sixth. Benolkin and Ryan took the final direct transfers. Howerton finished one place out, but (Conf.inued to page 24)
