Bob " Hurricane" Hannah came back to edge Bailey at the checkers in the second moto and take the overall win, maintaining his slim series points lead over temmate Bailey. ' Sunrise Cycle Park lived up to its name as the expected storm clouds stayed on the horizon, leaving excellent weather for the record crowds that attended this fourth round of the Continental Motosports Club's Petty Products Golden State Series. The rough , fast course drew many favora blecomments from competitors , with the on-track action more than living up to its pre-race billing. Moto Fox/Yarnaharrder Donnie Cantaloupi bested the 500cc Pro class after two furious motos were run in which Honda pilot Goat Breker, Yamaha rider T im Locey, and Yamaha-mounted Warren Reid all took a shot at winning the event. Kawasaki factory star Jeff Ward . provided most of the exciting 125cc Pro action as he played catch-up to Honda teamster Johnny O'Mara and Yamaha p ilot Ron Lechien. Ultimately, O 'Mara took the win with Ward second after Lechien fell in the second rnoto and DNF. 250 Pro Hannah and Bailey shared the lead as the pack knifed through turn on e a t the start of the first moto. Halfw ay into the lap, Hannah moved int o a clear lead with Bailey second and Lo.P..I.Sin isaI Q.l Ho n9a rider Jim Taranti no pu sh ing KTM rider Ron Turner for third. Bailey stayed close for a couple of laps. the n powered alongside Hannah in the tricky whoops passing the finish line and edged into the lead. Hannah beserked the next jump and regained the lead, but a few turns later, Bailey again moved past the Hurricane on a high-speed sweeper. Hannah took a tumble on the next lap, but quickly remounted to follow Bailey to the checkers . The Bailey/ Hannah duel had opened a 20-second lead over a tight third place battle between Tarantino, Turner. Kawasaki riders Billy Liles and Darren Rhoten and Austrian KTM pilot Heinz Kinigadner. Liles faded as the moto neared the end, apparently with no damping in the rear shock, Kinigadner DNF. Tarantino slipped to sixth behind a charging Ross Pedersen on a Suzu ki, and Turner held off a determined Rhoten to finish third. The Ba iley/ Ha nnah show continued in the second moto as "Little Professor" Bailey powered to the lead with Hannah locked to his rear fender , followed by R ho ten , Tarantino, Maico pilot Billy Grossi and Liles. , On the third lap, Hannah passed Bailey on the big jump and slowly bega n to pull away from his teammate as Liles look over third. With three laps rem aining, Bailey had fall en six seconds behind the leader, but began a drive that pulled him to Hannah's rear wh eel at the checkers, but Hannah held on to take th e win .
