Expert class. The win was far from
easy, how ever , as Houston Honda
p ilot Willie Phee led Beckham to
both rnotos and came with in a half
lap of tak ing overall cash . Beckham
passed Phee on the fourth lap of the
opening moto and took th e checkers
about 75 yards ahead of Phee.
In th e second heat Beckham let
P hee run free for the first few laps.
Apparently he was hoping he would
eventually tire from the hectic pace
he was setting and make a mistake
allowing the Yamaha to pass. With
two laps remaining, Phee was solidl y
in first place and showing no signs of
letting up. "When I saw th e white
nag come out, I couldn't bel ieve we
were that far into the race. It caught
me by surprise, and I had to make m y
move a little sooner than I expected, "
Beckham said after the contest was
over.
And a spectacular move it was !
Phee was passed off th e hazardous
double j u m p with the Yamaha landing scant millimeters from disaster
-at full throttle. "It may have looked
scary, but the bike handled beautifully and it was never out of control. I
ca me a little close lo th e edge of the
track wh ere th at hole is, but some tim es you have to do th at to win ,"
stated an unruffled Beckham.
One o f the better performances of
th e da y came in the 250cc Beg inner
class, wh ere David DePrado, in only
h is seco nd race, sco red come- fro mbeh ind wins in both molOS. DePrado
accomplished thi.s feat on a '79 Kawa-
