Sequoia volunteer.' party The Sept. 29, 1982 issue of Cycle News contained an article in Voices reviewing the successes of volunteers in Sequoia National Forest over the last two years. As noted, th e Sequoia Volunteers Party was to take place near year's end. Kathy and I regret to note that, due to death in the famil y, th is event had to be postponed. We again want to thank the several hundred volunteers who have made Sequoia a better place to ride. We hope to have th e Volunteers Party in la te spring '83_ But in any case , will look forward to seeing you all in the '83 Summer Ser ies. I have been advised that the Forest Service will be working hard, over the winter, on more new trail mileage.. I think they a lso deserve a hand Cor their excell ent cooperation with motorcyclists, and maximum work from a minimum budget allowa nce, to date. See yo u down th e tra il. BILL HERNDON Barbenders West M.C. Los Angeles, CA Thanks for '82 The 1982 ra cing season is over, and before we really get into th e '83 sea son, I'd like to make a few acknowledgemen ts. Thank yo u Cor all o f yo ur help and su p port during th e '83 season - yo u' re all ver y special people to me! Happy New Year! JASON COLLIER Riverside, CA Bureaucracy Ame rica is the last place on ea rt h wh ere a ny man has the righ t to be uniq ue, defiant , ungovernable and wh at he wa s meant to be: one of nature's little kings. This right is notably exercised by the Phantom Duck o£ the Desert .- champion of the public-land motorcyclist, nemesis o£ the BLM, quintessential liv ing Quixote. Although this little blade clinks futilely against the impenetrable stone walls of the BLM's mighty fortress, it is a sound heard throughout the world. He glares up and shouts " C h ea ts I Liars l Officious Boobsl" He pickets them in the rain, he goes to their mee tings wearing a pis tol, he hints darkly that their agents may disappear in th e field, Poss ibly he is mad. Possibly h is cause is hopeless. . -The Phantom Duck has many allies. Some are like himself , unafraid to kick shins, call names and openly support The Cause. Others admire him secretly. They are cautious. They a re big. Reall y big. Honda - and Yamaha-big. Being cautious is how the y got big . Like the BLM , they are monol ith ic bureaucracies run by ultraorganized hordes o£ invisible superhymenopterous beings in threep iece suits who group-think, doubletalk and win big because they always count every card. The Duck is a king, and motorcycle bureaucrats prefer to bet on aces . They donate vehicles, time and money to ghetto-child rehabili tation plans, civic improvement programs, police sa fety courses - things no one can poss ibl y crit icize without appearing cruel , insens itive or stu pi d. Their donations, called public rela tions, are carefully calculated and budgeted; and yes, the y give from th eir excess. That isn't wrong, it 's human. Louis McKey gi ves from hi s sustena nce, which is divine. Happy New Year , Louie.
