VOICES Thanks from Ham m er While laying in th e hosp ital in Wisconsin I was inundated with cards and letters from friends and total strangers alike. I 'was reall y dazzled and amazed by the kind thoughts and I appreciated everybody's con cern and good wishes. Now I'm working hard on my recovery at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, 7601 E. Im perial Hwy., Downey, CA 90242. in Ward 704. They tell me I'm going to be her e for five or six months, but I'm out to prove them wrong - especiall y since this place charges $668 a dayl It's going to take a long tim e and a lot of determination but I hope to see . all myoId frie nds and new friend s at the races sometime in the future. In the meantime I'll write - well, actually dictate - to let you know how it 's going. Thank you very much . BRUCE H AMMER Team H ammer Downey, CA Thanks for caring My heart aches from th e pain of my husband 's death. But , the sorrow I feel has been softened by th e kind prayers of so man y others. I didn 't know how I was going to face the: days surrounding the funeral. I felt alone in my grief, but I was wrong. The cards, calls and flowers we received were so very comforting. I. can 't begin to try to thank people individually, but I do want everyone to know that his family and I sincerely appreciate all the wonderful things that 'were done in Willie's memory. However, it 's especiall y important for us to express our gratitude to Jill Fili ce. During those nine days Willie remained in a coma, she gave us her car and house and rearranged her schedule to be by our side at the hospital. Just knowing so many people cared about him and they took their time to let us know makes what has happened a little easier to bear. Many people have said th ey just can 't believe it. It 's hard for us also. But Willie loved racing; it was hi s life. I've been told he was very happy that day at San Jose. He was proud to be Na tional #46 on the Winston Pro Ser ies, and I was proud to be his wife. Thank you and God bless everyone for caring so very much. I live in a suburb of Philadelphia and will be flying to Los Angeles on Nov; 18, 1982fora 10-14da y southern California vacation with my wife. Rather than pay Avis and be miserable all vacation in a car, I have a proposal: I'd like to have access to a 75Occor larger touring-equipped bike for 10-14 days. In return , I offer the similar use of my immaculate 1976 BMW R90/ 6 equipped with head lamp modulator. tote box, saddle bags and windscreen. I have owned seven different motorcycles, ridden over 100,000 safe miles , and I am a certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor. I live one day's ride from Montreal, Vermont, New Hampshire, Niagara Falls, Washington D.C. and the Skyline Drive. Interested? Write me. HOWARD CYLINDER clo The Franklin Research Center Roo m 562, .Century Buildi ng 20th &: Rich St. Philadelphia, PA 19103 DONNA CRABBE THE CRABBE FAMILY Baltimore, MD Sand Flea GP I'm writing in response to the second annual Sand Flea GP which was held June 6 at Lord Ellis Summit, near Blue Lakes , CA. The race , which was run by th e Far West M.e., was run in th e forest on Simpson Timber Company property and was much better, in my opinion, th an th e Sand of Samoa the year before . The forest , some of which was so dense that vou almost needed a headlight to see the trail, was fun and required the riders to keep on their toes to negotiate som e of th e secti ons. Of course, Mother Nature played a big hand in the excelle nt co urse condit ions' wi th ra in the pr evious four days. The rider turnout was down , probably du e to th e remote location and tim e of th e year. The only flaw s I found were with the parking (bu t it didn 't a ppear that they co uld have done anything about that), and the placing of some of the danger arrows. Some were placed too close to the danger area and caused more than a few riders (including myself) .to take soil samples until those parts of the course were memorized. However, the Far West M.C . deserves a lot of credit for a wellorga nized race, quick results and good trophies. It's nice to be in events like these , and this event was also an Easter Seal benefit race. Everyone I talked to after the race liked it and I can only hope they ru n their event in that area next year. Observed trialsters tackle Donner Lake!
