TEN YEARS AGO H arley-Davi dson-moun ted Cal Ra yborn was the clas s of th e field as he won th e 125-m ile road race National at Indianapolis Ra ceway Pa rk. Yvon DuHamel (Kaw) had the ear ly lead . but ignition troubles dropped him back to 20th. a nd he reall y had to charge back to finish second ahea d of Gene Romero (Tri) . The J unior/ Expert race saw Kel Carruthers defea t Ron Pierce in a Yamaha-dominated battle. whil e th e Kaw asak is of J ames Deehan and Jerry Greene finished 1-2 in th e J unior race. Florida 's John Long bested Ted Henter in the Novice race. Brad Lackey (CZ) was th e O pen class winner in a n AMA Pro motocross at Lake Tahoe. CA. Following his wak e were Gary Chaplin (Mai ), Robert Brown (H us) and Rich Thorwaldsori (Suz). In the 250cc class works Yamahas paced the race . with Gary Jones topping Jimmy Weinert for th e overall win. Rex Staten was third on a CZ. Ray Pickrell, Phil Read and Giacomo Agostini were among the winners at the annual Isle of Man TT. However, the 38-mile race course claimed its 99th fatality, Gilberto Parlotti, a close friend of Agostini's. In an AMA Pro TT at Clackamas , OR, Chuck Joyner edged out Trophy Dash winner Randy Scott for the Expert main event victory. In the Junior class Steve Baker won both the TD and the main. Gary Scott was the Expert winner in the annual Charity Newsies half mile at Dayton, OH. Mike Johnson was th e Junior winner, whil e Steve Morehead did in the Novi ces. Forty-year-old Art Knapp (Hus ) captured his first overall win in the desert, taking the Rim Runners hare scrambles. Second overall went to Jim Fishback (CZ). Webco, Inc. announced the appointment of Winston Beaumont as its adverti sing manager. Bill Payne (Mai ) took both the 250 and 500cc classe s at a CMC Ascot motocross. Bob Messer and Tim Hart finished 2-3 in the former event, while Hart pulled a runner-up spot in the latter. In the 125cc Experts it was Husky-mounted Bruce Baron topping the Puch of Jeff Wright. PRO-SHOCK CHASSIS FOR YAMAHA 4-STROKE SINGLES Gus Lauer won the Scratch main in a . speedway race at Cal-Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento, CA. The Handicap main saw Jerry Baugh and Carl Cranke fin ish 1-2. Duance Spence, Mike VanLienden , Jim Foley and Ted Davidson were th e Expert class victors in a scram bles at H ayward , CA.
