"Magoo" (left) had The Look en route to his runaway first mota win. Mud and water made g09gles useless after the first few laps. Mike Bell (top right) got on the gas in the second mota for the win and fourth overall. (Above right) Andre Malherbe lays in pain while Jaak van Velthoven rides past. S Hudson go t going late in the race to take seventh ahead of fellow Briton Graham Noy ce on a factory Honda, Breker and Sun. Between motos , the pits were a flurry of activity as wheels and tires were replaced , suspension adjusted o r replaced and riders attended to. Lackey sported a small welt undernea th his right eye from a rock thrown fro m the crowd after he removed his goggles. " I was going up the uphill , and it could ha ve been from another bike" he said, " bu t there wasn 't another bike around." In addition , Lackey had to cope with a broken shock sp ri ng during the latter part of the moto, Factory.Yamaha rider Hakan Carlqvist from Sweden, who was unable to ride due to pain from a broken finger on his throttle hand incurred the week before, helped Bell set up hi s shock better for the seco nd moto . Shultz got the rocket start again in the second round followed by Hondamounted G ary Semics a nd Magoo, Ch andler was quick to displace Sernics for second with Vromans and Bell a lso getting past later. Semics retired after he a lso fell in th e same spot ' Malherbe did, hurting hi s right leg . Chandler slowl y inched up on Shultz when suddenly, Shultz waved him pa st in a short stra ig h ta way. " I got into a hea vy shock-swapper," a disappointed " Sh u" related later. " He swa p ped rea l hard, a nd I thou ght h e was going d own , " Chandler sai d. " It looked to me like he stuffed hi s kn ee, one of his bad knees or so mething, bu t he pulled over and waved me by." Shultz could not continue at race pace and drifted backwards through the pack before packing it in for the da y after mid-race. That left Ch andler holding the lead, and the crowd, eager to see the freckle-faced, red haired racer repeat Marty Moates' I-I triumph in '80, waved him on. About 35 minutes into the rnoto, though, Bell came around in th e lead ahead of Vromans, King, Lackey and Chandler. Magoo had gone down, 'bu t he was trying to reel them back in. ·" 1 was trying to catch up, and I was making mistake after mi stak e 'cause I was getting tir ed, " he ad mitted. Noyce, th e '79 World 500cc ti tlist, went down hard while in 10th before the midway point in the race. " First I got a lot o f wa ter over me a nd m y grips were loose," the En glishman explained, " and I went down th e big downhill , and my hands went off the handlebar! I took it back and gave it the gas and was too fast, so I went into th e corner and turned. The handl ebar went underneath (his left knee), a nd th e whole bik e came on top of me with all the weight - it' s not so good ," he sai d as he lim ped to collect hi s pa ych eck. Bell , who was fourth on the opening lap, a much better start th an in the firs t race , ap pa ren tly benefitted fro m Carlqvist's advice. He got 'by King ' for third .before the halfway point then latched onto second after displacing Vromans near the 30minute point and then inherited the lead a couple laps later. " It took me a long tim e to get going .in th e first rnoto," Bell said. " It cost me, bu t I don't have any regrets; I rode as best I could. I'm pumped; I won the rnoto. It 's finally starting to come together." Lackey passed King to mo ve into contention for seco nd with Vromans. The Belgian " sand specialist" was ridin g th e sa me lines .as Lackey, th ough , making it difficult to pass. " T he re was much mud, and it made it hard to pass. The lines were small.?' Vrom ans said. Despite hi s fro n t brake lock ing on bumps due to a loose cabl e, Lackey tried to charge on the final lap - a second would have given him the overall - but-vroman, .h d d..'Kin g and Chandler were fourth and fifth wh ile Sun pa ssed Hudson on the fina l lap for sixth. Breker got eighth fo llo wed by van Velthoven and Husky's Bill Grossi. When asked what he would do at th e end of the yea r after winning the title, La ckey repl ied , " I' m going to walk over to Malherbe's bike and cut the number plate off and say, 'This is go ing to the States, Jack !'
