Conseq uently, eac h time th e leaders came near th e fini sh line it was even odds so meone wou ld run into trouble. In th e fir st m ot o Ri ck Rodgers (Kaw) took th e early lead a nd held on for a lap'. T he n on the second lap th e Pro sectio n got th e better of him and he dropped to second, giving the lead to Brodie. Brodie kept his H onda up front for severa l laps until h e went down, guess where, and Dym ond, who had passed Rodgers a lap ea rlier, took over. But Dymond's lead only lasted two laps until he messed up in the Pro section and Brodie took the lead back. Brodie held on for the checkered flag with Dymond and Rodgers following. In the second moto Brodie wrestled the holeshot from the others and tried to pull away. But Dymond and Rodgers were close behind. After a few laps Brodie and Dymond pulled away, leaving Rodgers secure in third. At the halfway point Dymond started to try to force Brodie into a mi stake or into a bad line so he could pass. That didn't work too well , so Dymond tried to set up Brodie in each turn. A couple of times through the stutterbumps had Dymond edge a wheel in front but Brodie had the lead a t the next left hand turn. With two laps left Dymond left th e gas on a little longer over a jump, took the insid e over the tabl etop turn and emerged in the lead, Dymond held o n for th e overall win; Brodie ended up secon d . The l25cc Novice Division Two was a toss-up this week. Don Kelley took hi s Corvette Works-backed Yamaha to th e first moto win aft er passing Doug Hawkins in the middle of th e race . Kurt Strand passed Hawkins for ' second with a co up le of laps left and Hawkins had to sett le for third. In th e second go -around, wh ich turned out to be a scorer's nightmare with a n II, Ilx a nd a III , Strand pil oted h is wa y to th e win with Eri c Clems on moving from sixth place to seco nd in five laps. Dymond does H again at OCIR MX By Steven Crosby IRVINE, CA , JUNE 3 Maico-mounted Micky Dymond traded mota wins with Ceet's Jim Brodie to capture the 250cc Pro title for the second 44 time in as many week s -a t Orange County Internat ional Raceway. The turnout at th e R.A.C.E . event really jumped when everyone h eard abo u t the new section in the tra ck and recovered from the three-da y weekend. And as an added incentive to win, all of the Thursday night races in June will be qualifiers for th e California Racing Club's Am ateur Day at th e L.A. Coliseum on July 18. The story in 250cc Pro was the new Pro secti on. Most all of the Pros were here the week before and had a chance to run through the tricky whoop-dedoos. Yamaha support ra cer Pete Snorteland, long considered o ne of southern California 's leading Pros, turned hi s m ounts loo se and quite sim p ly was unbeatable in both Open and 250cc Pro contes ts, taking down backto-b ack wins for both classes. T he first moto for th e 250cc Pros found Snorteland fighting to tak e co m m a nd. Wh at with Kal-G ard 's Ru ss Wagem an a n d Kawasaki mounted Kenny Zahrt dicing for the lead, Snorteland was on the gas and slip ped into second when Wageman bailed radically in th e middle o f the pack . Suzuki pilot Craig Cole overtook third, an d the heat, was on Zahrt. The three men pulled far aw ay into th eir own wo rld, providing the racehungry crowd with wheel-clashing, mid-air dices down to the end. Snorteland snaked the lead, holding " O ld King Cole" to second and Zahrt to third. Wh en th e machines came to life for their second round of action, Wageman once more grabbed the holeshot only to find Cole swinging into the lead by the top of the start hill. Snorteland was fighting, in fourth and picking off racer after racer like a raging buill With the moto drawing to a close, Cole and Snorteland held a private drag race down to the end with Snorteland finally inching past Cole for th e gold and holding him to second to the end. Wageman finished in third, good for fourth place money, and third overall loot went to Zahrt for a super 3-5 ride. . A gutsy 1976 Yamaha that never for one moment believed it couldn 't be competit ive while piloted by Dean Lane won the hearts of the spectators in the 250cc Beginner contest. The start of the first round found Lane in ninth , 'fighting his way up through the pack and into third by the end. Marty Desbrow, guiding a Honda four-stroker for Mac Tools, took charge of th e moto and held Mark Wiklund to second down to the wire. In their final race of the day , Wiklund led the way with the fourstroker thundering up behind in the shotgun position . Along came Lane, rounding out th e terribl e trio, and th e three men put the rest of th e field to sh ame, a gutsy gang hanging on to the top three positions by the skin of their teeth. By the end of the day Wiklund took home top honors with a 2-1 ride , Disbrow's four-strok er gathered up second pl ace go ld , and Lane 's 1976 Yamaha gave a brilliant 3-3 performance for third overall, Results 60 NOV: 1.
