A lot of times we didn't even know - this one's good, that one's not so good, this one's beuer but it may not last. We did a lot of tire testing, cornpounding expe rime nt s and all that stuff. Now I run th e whole practice session with the same tir e and I come in and Dunlop'lI say, "Well, we could go a Iiule so fter. We could try this on e if yo u want to." We'll stick it on and it'll be a little better lap tim e or it ma y not be but it 's still raceable. And I spend most of m y time racing the bike and when th e last practice comes around , we don't have anything to test. I just go out a nd ride th e bike. But that's going to happen no matter what. If I were running Michelin it would be the same. Du nl o p 's building new tires. We have a whole new series of compounds, new construction and profiles . Bu t we don't have 30 tires to test. We have new profiles and new compounds but there's Ra ndy Mamola, Kork Ba ll ingto n, and Marc Fontain, testi ng tires too , so it's not like one guy has to test all these tires , We ca n test eight different tires in one practice session where before I could onl y test th ree. We have a new 16-inch front tire that will be on the race track. I had been using 18" fronts with a new mold that they'd made for me at the beginning of the year. And it is just now perfected. The first time it hit the race track was Spain and we won so I used it in Italy and it will probably be one of the back-up tires in the case the 16" doesn 't come out perfect. To change thesubjm from what works to what doesn ' t. what hap pened at Nogaro? Why di d the race have to be boycotted? Well, a series of things happened. The last time we ran there was four years ago and it was rough. The paddock was too small and the race track was too rough so , of course, it didn 't get run on again. All of a sudden last year there was talk of running Nogaro again and the president ?f the road racin.g co~ mittee, Brenni, asked the top riders in September, if they wanted to run at Nogaro. The French want to run at Nogaro. We said absol utely not. Well , he got outvoted at Congress and they voted to run Nogaro. He told them at ' that time that the top riders said that Nogaro was too rough. They outvoted him and said, " It 's fine, there's been some resurfacing done, the paddock has been fixed ." When we heard they had approved Nogaro, I phoned Franco Uncini. . .
