O 'Mara moved past some early competition in both motos and easily outran the field on his Jim Felt prepared RC 125 works machine. It was his first return to Europe since his team wins in the Motocross and Trophee des Nations and the small, but enthusiastic crowd was on his side all the way. " H e was the fastest rider out there today," said Suzuki's Erik Geboers, who finished behind O 'Mara in both motos to take second overall. Third overall with a pair of three's was Italy's Corrado Maddii on the Gilera . Geboers moved to within five points (112-107) of leader Marc Ve1keneers in the race for the world title. Velkeneers had an off da y with seventh place finishes in both races. World Champion Harry Everts of Team Suzuki didn't fare much better with a 4-8 day that saw him lose, ground in the ti tle chase to three other riders. With his win,O'Mara moved into eighth in the standings. First Moto After topping the supplementary qualifying to make the field, Johnny 0' qualified fourth for the spots on the starting gate. The gate fell and as the 40 riders reached the first turn at the end of the 100 yard straight, Everts was in the lead followed by a pack made up of O'Mara, Geboers, Roland Diepold, Maddii and Hoiland's Johnny. Ponjee. Velkeneers gated poorly and was away 32nd. O'Mara didn't wait long and on the third lap he scooped under Everts in the first hairpin, gassed the throttle and was off to the races. Everts dropped back to third as fellow Belgian Geboers got by also, with Maddii a comfortable fourth ahead of the Japanese I 25ccchamp, Honda's Yohifumi Sugio, who looked a little out of control. Once out front, O 'Mara start ed to put ground between himself arid Geboers. The two of them were jumping a double-jump on the back part of the course in one leap, with most riders preferring to take them one at a time. It was one of the few jumps on the smooth 1.4 mil e course of which O'Mara was clearly the master. "T here's no technique to it. You just hold it wide open all the way around. It's not very rough and except for the back part of the course there aren 't many jumps," said O 'Mara. "I had some trouble passing guys since it's not like The States where they know me and move over," He backed off on the final lap and finished four seconds ahead of Geboers. Geboers in turn had 48 seconds on Maddii, who managed to pull some distance on Everts. Gilera's Michele Rinaldi inherited fifth when Sugio did a spectacular endo on a steep downhill, opening a gash • in his head that took six stitches to close. Sixth and seventh went to Yamaha teamsters Jacky Vimond and Velkeneers. : , ..
