C'I co Q') .... (Clockwise from top left) 250cc winner Broc Glover (6) and new champ Donnie Hansen diced to the end in the first moto. Mike Bell took third 500. Warren Reid went 3-5 for fourth 250. Rick Johnson's bid for the 250cc title ended when his front wheel broke in the first moto while going for second. - h im augering into the Rocky Mountain soil. He drew himself slowly to his feet o after a few min utes, started his bike .£.i and ran beside it to th e mechanics' area, the pain of disappointment marking his face and the front wheel wobbling from side to side. John· son's mechanic Bob Oliver sp rin ted back to the pits, picked up an oth er dr wheel and replaced it . Ol iver later bn said that even the axle was bent. .1 Johnson was back in the race, though e a lap and a half down . He needed to get into the top 20 in order to score any precious points, but he would ultimately be able to " on ly" work his wa y back up to 23rd. The race , of course, took on an , entirely different tone. Broc G lover, '0 who came a ro u nd fifth on the fir st lap, cut through the riders in front of ~ him until only Hansen remained in the distance. Glover narrowed th e gap after the midpoint in the rnoto then stuffed his bike inside of Hansen in the downhill right-hander , the second turn before the finish line, to take th e lead. Hansen stayed with Glover and went back into th e lead as they took th e two-laps-to-go board. On the final lap, Glover wicked it up in an all-out assault. He got by for what most people, in cl u d in g Honda .per so n n el , thought was the winning pass in the second-to-last turn, deftly using lappers to wiggle into first. Hansen wasn ' t through yet. "He was braking for the last turn," Hansen said later. " I just left it on longer and went on th e outside of him and got a wh eel in th e groove that he was in , the front wheel. My rear end was o n the outsid e so 1 kind of slid it around a nd came out set up for th e straigh taway , a nd 1 beat hi m by half a bike- _ length. It was close." Su zuki 's Warren Reid moved fro m a n openi ng lap seventh to fourth halfway through the moto . He worked o n Keylon , successfully gaining third a bo ut 40 m in utes into th e race.. Liles finished fifth, Burnworth six th, while Honda 's Da vid Bailey was a closing seventh in a remarkable rid e, ha ving gone down early on th e first lap, remounting on ly after every rider h ad channel ed around his bike and ge t. ting a way a decided last place. H onda su p port rider Steve Martin advance d to ei gh th , followed by LOP Honda rider J im Tarantino and Dave Hollis. Glover got the jump on th e gate in the second moto and took off; th e only other co m pe titors who saw h im aft er th e sta rt were lappers, as his margin of victory was over 20 seconds. Hansen sta rted in second and was content to let Johnson go by a bo u t 10 minutes into th e moto. " I knew what 1had to do, and 1didn't push it in th e seco n d m oto," H an sen . recalled. " I didn 't want to fall or get tangled up with those guys, just hold back th ere." H ansen repassed Johnson n ear th e 15-minute mark, but Johnson went back around for good the next time around, a nd H ansen , who'd ru n out of tear-offs, wa s sa tisfied to cruise in third to ea rn h is first National Champ ionship on hi s Brian Lunniss-tuned factory Honda. Reid held fourth for most of th e moto until a downed ride r 's bike, in a blind sect ion of track, without a Ilagger according to Reid, took h im . o ut for a few moments a t th e 40minute point. That was all Keylon needed to hop back into fourth while Reid remounted for fifth. Ba iley rode to a sixth followed by Burnworth, Liles, Martin and Suzuki sup port rider Clint H ardick . 500cc N at ional Dar r ell Sh ultz h eaded Da nn y " Magoo" Chandler an d Chuck Su n in a three-man H onda freight train at the start o f th e first moto. Mike Bell wa tched th em a short d istance to the rear with Donnie Ca ntalo up i in fift h, th ough a shock reservoir li ne rep ort ed ly bro ke a short time later, forci ng him o ut. Sun took his turn at the front until just before the halfway po int wh en Shultz retook the lead , barely fending off a hard charging Alan King, who was eigh th o n the first lap aboard his facto ry Suzuki. King finally had his sh ot at th e point just after the 30-minute mark, but Shultz ga the red h imself up a n d blasted back by for good on th e wh ite £lag lap. Bell passed Sun for third midway through th e race and repulsed a la st turn ch arge to hold it . The front four had put so me time on fifth p lace Chandler. Kaw asaki's Goat Breker went a ro u nd' KT M' s John Finkeldey for six th on th e fin al lap. Eu rocy cles Maico rider Jerome H eiberger put in an im p ressive ride for eighth over Yam aha Pro Su p port rider J err H icks, ridin g with a broken tooth after ca tch in g a rock in practi ce, a nd Steve Rh yan. Bell started the seco nd mo to in the lead wi th Shultz in close quarters . King an d Sun wer e also keeping an eagle eye o n Bell 's m oves. T he first fo ur were dest in ed to be th e sa me as in th e fir st moto, th ough th e order was different. Shultz led from th e seco nd lap until before the halfway point as positions behind h im swi tched seemingl y with each twist and ri se of th e tra ck . Su n put it to Sh u ltz a n d led each lap, th ough not every part of eac h lap, to the fin ish. Shultz tried to mak e . a run a t Sun on th e last lap, bu t co u ldn ' t make it stick. " I felt a little stiff," Shultz admitted later. " Wha t a di sa ster; 1co u ld n' t even bel ieve it. If 1 would have had th at much more energy," h e said, indicating a small ga p betwee n hi s thumb and finger, " I wou ld 've ma de th e pass st ick. He sn uck back u n de r m e, and 1slid ou t a li ttl e bit." Bell rode in for a so lid th ird with Kin g getting fourth and fourt h ove rall - " I' ve never ridden that hard in m y life to take a f~>Urth place; it was ridiculous!" he exclaimed. Chandler was an im p ressive fifth ...a fter a last place start. " I just got shu t off, a n d 1 wen t do wn real bad. 1 started to put my leg down, but it probably would've got sucked up in Sh ultz's wh eel so 1 j us t tr ied to lean out of it, but 1 couldn 't and went down. And then 1 stalled it twice." Husky's Bill Grossi fin ished sixth over Jo Jo Keller, Hicks, Brek er and Central Yamaha's Mike Knupp. For Shultz, who hurt so bad after last week's race in Atlanta that he didn 't practi ce all week , " It feels pretty good being on a roll and heading toward a cham p ions h ip ." • Results 250 NATIONAL: 1.
