TEN YEARS AGO Though results were not o££icial, Doug Wilford's score of 2537 earned him the overall win at the Bad Rock Trial, a two-day ISDT qualifier held in Weston. OR. Billy Uhl tallied 2579 points for second while observed trials rider Lane Leavitt was a speculative third in the wet and muddy round. After a review of ISDT rules. the Yankee Ossa team of Dave Latham. Don Cutler and Charlie Vincent were awarded the Trade Team Trophy for the previous week's Trask Mountain Trial. not the Penton East team. Kawasaki's R&D folks gave Papa Wealey the latest on their "490" MXer - it was actually a 420 and would ( probably be unveiled in production form at the Laguna Seca National. Sonny Burres led the way in the Expert main, even after a red-flag restart, and captured the win at the Castle Rock TT. Jim Einarsson won the Junior main while Ricky Graves led the Novices to the checkered. e After Dave Aldana came down with . the flu before practice. forfeiting a chance to continue his win streak. Frank Gillespie filled in and won the Ascot half mile Expert main over Jody Nicholas and Lloyd Houchins. Tom Horton edged Larry Gino for the Junior main win . and Rick Hockingdominated the Novice ranks. Bill Silverthorn and Gene Fetty teamed up on a stock-framed Honda o XL250 to win the Baja 5OO's twol wheeled side. The overall win. on '(,-co rrected time, went to ex-biker Bob )l Ferro in a Sandrnaster buggy. i!' "Wild" Bill Cody took the Scratch main at Ventura's speedway show while Don Cullum topped the Handicap main and the Scratch consy. Farther north in Napa, Butch Corder captured the Scratch main win. Paul Minor. Jr. came from the zero to win the Handicap main. The AFM road race at Orange County International Raceway in Irvine. CA. saw Bob Endicott win Open Production and 5oo·0pen GP on a Honda and BSA, respectively. Mike Summer (Yam) ran away with 250cc GP. Kevin Stafford was declared the winner of the lOO-lap Jim Brockman Memorial TT at South Bay Speedway in Chula Vista, CA. after a protest and lap check showed him a lap ahead of Sal Peluso. who mistakenly received the checkered flag first. The Loudon road race National saw Gary Fisher use a pair of Yarnahas, a TD3 250 and a TR3 350, to win the 250cc Combined and the National races, respectively. Mark Brelsford (H-D) was second in the National and took the point lead while Kenny Roberts was the 250cc runner-up. • Remember When? 21
