They finished Tecza, Hodum and Cox, Stephens four each at SNRR In the 450cc Super Street class, the two rookies, Jim Cox and R ick Elias, dueled with veteran Mike VanNatta. This time youthful exuberance prevailed, a nd Cox took the winner's spot with Elias second and VanNatta third. Next on the grid were the combined 750 and Open Super Street classes. In the Open race, Stephens took the win over the turbo 900 Kawasaki, sponsored by Cycletron and ridden by Jon Parisena. After the race, Jon said that the old 900 was just about ready for retirement. In the 750cc assemblage, Tecza, Hodum and Haupt were dicing it out. Tecza, however, was not to be denied, and at the flag it was Tecza, Hodum and Haupt. _ The final race of the day was the 500cc GP class. With only three ' entries, it didn 't promise to be a real cliffhanger, but when those three are Cox, Elias and VanNatta, you just never know . With Cox in the lead and Elias constantly challenging, it turned out to be one of the better races of the day . VanNatta, obv iously down on horsepower compared to the other two , rode his mount to the hilt and played a waiting game, but his hopes of capitalizing on the mistakes of th e two "Young Turks" were to come to naught. Suzuki's John Conney was gaining yardage on Skibel and soon made the pass. Then on a slippery downhill section Conney fell down, and Skibel regained second place. Conney wasn't out of the contest, and he remounted his bike and set out after Skibel. He made the pass on the finish line jump. Conney followed Lewis throughout the rest of the race while Skibel placed third. Skibel had another excellent start in the final rnoto but lost the lead to Lewis, Conney and Dennis Parker. Though Lewis was not able to take a ho leshot, his aggressive style of riding earned him the overall win with a I-I tally. Conney's 2-2 placed him in second ahead of Ski bel's 3-4 and Parker's 6-3. ..... lSuzl. VET EX; I . t - I I Spi.. (Ylmt 2. Rl ndy Lewis IHUIl: 3. lIny S'-mII
