With racing going into the final four events, the points situation shaped up thusly: Sigalos had 12 points, Autrey had II, and the Moran brothers each had 10. Schwartz, after his fast start, suffered the third place finish at the hands of Sigalos and Kelly Moran, and then had crashed hard after tagging John Cook's rear wheel while trying to pass on the outside in race 15. He walked away from the crash, but scored no points. So Cook had eight points and Schwartz and Faria had seven. Sigalos made his final appearance in event 17, going up aga inst Cook, Gene Woods and Alan Christian. "Siggy" made it five for five in the start department, and led to the checkered flag, which he took on the rear wheel to the applause of the crowd. Cook finished second, ahead of Woods and Christian. The next race featured Kelly Moran , Sims, Lucero and Keith Chrisco, a I reserve who had taken Steve Greshham's place after Gresham crashed in his third rid e. Moran led start to finish as Chrisco passed Lucero in the early going for second, and after Lucero dropped out with motor trouble, Sims took thinl. Event 19, pitting Autrey, Shawn Moran, Schwartz and Mik e Bast , would playa major outcome of the evening. Autrey could guarantee himself with a win , while a Moran win and a runner-up fin ish by Autrey would create a three-wa y ti e for second. . Moran, also known as "T h e-Miracle Worker," made it work at the start as he came from the number two position on the starting gate into the first tum fractionally ahead of Schwartz. Autrey went high through the . first turn, but swept down to overtake Schwartz on the backstraight. Autrey was up to second, but try as he might, he couldn't make up any distance on t t .• • . So it ended Moran, Autrey, Schwartz and Bast, and there was a three-way tie for second between the Moran brothers and Autrey . The final regular race of the evening, won by Faria, meant little and it was on to a four-lap run-off. In a draw for starting positions, Shawn Moran drew the pole, Autrey the number three spot and Kelly Moran got the outside position. When the tapes flew, the Morans got the jump on Autrey and arrived at the first turn approximately simultaneously. Shawn had the lead coming out of turn two and for the remainder of the race, the order held. Joining Sigalos and Penhall, the Morans will be the first brothers in World Speedway competition since Jack and Cordy Milne in the '30s. In victory circle , Sigalos credited his victory to, "Mainly my mechanic, girlfriend ~nd sponsors. It all pai~ off . . tonight." Later he added, "I feel really great. I made some good starts and that was half of it. " Shawn Moran, who was eliminated in a run-off for the final qualifying spot in last year's American qualifier, said, ..It was unfortunate that Scott didn't make the gate. We just rode our best... · Kelly Moran echoed h is brother's feelings. "It's so good to get it over . with. I feel great for my brother, but I feel bad for Scotty.
