AKA One-Day Qualllier Series: Round seven Rowell outhustles Rines lor Timber Mtn. • win By Mark Kariya MEDFORD, OR, MAY 30 Chip Howell secured his spot on the 1982 U.S. ISDE team by edging Kevin Hines, 912-915 points (seconds), at the Timber Mountain One-Day Qualifier. Howell also topped II other gold medal finish ers in th e 500cc Intent class aboard th e Yamaha IT465H he rode in last year's Six Days co mpetition. 8 Husky-m ounted Hines led all 250cc Intent ri ders with his score in th is ina ug ural so ut hern O regon event p u t on by th e Mo torcycle Riders"Associatio n and characterized by tigh t trails and d ust. Matt C ulli ns took top hon ors in I75cc Intent with 939 poin ts (seconds) o n his Yamaha ITI75J while Kei th Moore screamed to th e head o f the 125cc Intent class with a score o f 958 on h i s Kawa sak i KX 125 wa terpumper. Of note was th e addi tio n of an 80cc Intent class for the 75cc Fantic ridden by Carl Cranke. Borrowing th e bike from Fred Cameron. the Six Days vet zeroed the course and did respe ctably well in all the special tests. too. Cranke is not planning to ride this year's ISDE, however. and merely competed for grins. Event Chairman T yrrell Hart described th e 127.6-mile co u rs e as " sha ped roughly like a lollipop. " Riders started from th e Medford Motocross Park. headed west on pavement about 12 miles. rode a large and snake-like route through th e pine- covered mountains west of J acksonville a nd returned via th e sa me road to Medford MX Park a fter nearly eigh t hours. Some Int ent riders reported being from as littl e as a minute to 25 minutes earl y a nd said the schedule co uld have been tigh tened. The first special test came aft er the seco nd gas and was 3.8 miles on an uphill fir e road. Due to prevailing conditions ~ dry, slick and dusty the serpentine road was deceptively tricky. One corner in particular claimed a number of victims who went into it a little too hot and slid straight off the edge to be stopped by a large bush. At one point, there were four riders down there - 250cc A rider Alan Seymour who stopped to assi st a rider he thought may have been injured, Open Intent rider Dan Sm ith who DNF with shift problems as a result and Chuck Miller. another Open Intent rider, who let his YZ490 go when he realized he was going off. Miller scrambled back to his bike. got it ba ck up to the road and kept going. It took him 381 seconds (points) for the test as a resul t. Open Intent rider Bob Rutten smoked to th e fastest tim e with a 337 on his 490 Ma ico. A flat o n th e trail cos t him points a t one check. Despite co m pe titi ve times in th e rem ainin g tests, though , he was disqualified for mi ssing check I I, which he claimed he never saw . Rutten said he didn 't feel he was lost through the sectio n, as he had sight of course ribbons. a nd severa l o the r rid ers missed th e check, but it was not thrown out. Open Intent rider J ohn Haakeron a KTM 495 was th e onl y o ther rider to get into the 330s with his 339. Ra y Cosgrove. who put a new engine in his 490 Maico just before Saturday night's impound. and J oe Coppedge on another 490 turned in equal times of 347. Howell 's 348 tied KTM 495mounted James Norris' time. H ines was by far th e fastest 250 with his 340. Next in cla ss was Maico rider John Blythe wi th a 349. Cullins had the best 175cc time at 355 fol lowed by Stev e McCall with 358 on his Yamaha. Moore's 360 bested the 125cc class. Cranke turned a 398 on h is Fantic, The next special test ca me near th e end o f th e day before th e work period and motocross. A one-and-an-eighthmile course was ribboned in a grassy field a cross th e street from the MX park. Desert racer Miller smoked th e test with a 188 followed by Howell a nd Michael Hefftner o n a KTM 495, both with 191. Cullins turned a 192, one second ahead of H in es, three faster than Haaker. Husky-mounted 250cc Intent rider Ra y Mungenasr's 196 ca me next over 175cc Intent rider Za ch El kins ' (C- A) a n d Husk ymounted 500cc Intent rider Morris Norman's 197. Hines' time might have been faster. but he slid out in one rock y corner. The final mot ocross pitted up to 10 riders at a time going for th ree timed laps from a dead -engine start . Howell put his AMA Distri ct 38 cha m pionship experience to good use in th e fifth heat, turning th e three laps in 373 seconds (points). Open A rider Brad Turn idge won the second heat on his KTM with Hines right behind to record a 382. Cullins was 10 seconds in arrears. Mungenast won the seventh heat in 382 to sew up second in class. Moore kept his Kawasaki on the pipe for second in the heat, and his 394 easily topped his class. Miller won th e eighth heat in 380. Cosgrove could only watch him from second place. in an eventua l 389; he had been pl agued by a mi sshifting tranny much o f th e da y, a nd he repo rted ha vin g o nly second and th ird gears in the MX.
