MO R R IS, PA, MAY 30 Yamaha's Rick Johnson and Honda's Darrell Shultz used the optimum condition of High Point Raceway to their advantage and topped the 250 and 500cc classes, respectively, in the Wiseco National Championship MX rounds. Johnson 's II .performance had him outrunning Honda 's Donnie Han- 6 sen in moto one and Yamaha 's Broc Glover in moto two. Johnson now holds a commandi ng points lead in the 250cc ra nks with two ro unds remain ing, and he loo ks to be the best bet for the '82 title. For Shultz, it was his first Nation al outdoor win. "Sh u" turned in a 2-1 da y, follow in g teammate Dann y Ch andler home in moto one, th en staving off th e charges of Suzuki 's Alan King the second tim e out. Shultz is still on the come back from a knee injury earlier in th e year, and rod e th e final laps of rnoto two on will power aft er his knee started to give way. The da y started on a poor note for fou r-t im e National Champion Glover, who was limping th rough the pits during practice. "I was testing in Ohio last week and my bike went into n eutral over a double jump," said Glover. " When I crashed my (righ t) knee hit the crossbar so hard th e cro ssbar got ben t. I have some fluid on my kn ee and need 10 have it drained. This is really bogus." When th e !pte dropped for moto o ne Kawasaki T eam Green's Billy Lil es had th e holeshot and pulled a quick lead over Glover and Yamaha's SCOll Burnworth. Liles was riding Tom Benolkin 's works Kawasaki , since Benolkin is on th e injured lis t. By lap three it was Burnworth's turn out front after he used a ju mp 10 edge past Liles. Honda's Kenny Keylon worked into third and was on a pace which was carrying him closer to the leaders every lap. The next lap Glover moved back into third with Keylon a few yards behind, heading a cluster of bikes. The front runners headed for the back section of the course, and when the y hit th e front stra igh taway it was Burnworth, Liles and Johnson heading Suzuki 's Warren Reid, Glover and Keylon . Johnson pushed the top trio into a 20 yard stretch of track, and soon took the lead . On the next circuit Keylon was running in mid-pack, carrying the tell-tale sign of a crash - caked mud on hi s jersey. As the 40 minute plus two laps moto neared the halfway m ark H ansen was .sh o w in g hi s strength as he moved to second while other riders tired . Within another lap J ohnson and Hansen pulled awa y for a run to th e finish . Hansen pushed Johnson hard, then harder, finally working past. Reid had moved to third, Burnworth and Liles were close beh ind, and Glover and Bailey were 6-7. During the clos ing laps Hansen and Johnson put 31 seconds on third place Burnworth. The only rider matching the pace was Bailey, who moved past Liles on a downhill, then passed Reid and Burnworth for third. Johnson kept prodding Hansen's defenses and finally retook the lead. He then got a second wind and started pushing even harder, earning an easy win. Hansen finished second, Bailey was th ird, and Reid landed fourth. Burnworth, Glover and Liles were 56-7, two straightaways back from Reid. ยท . " I saw Hansen ahead, and when he wasn't pulling me I followed him close," said Johnson.
