All tru e speedway fans know tha t o ne Moran is worth the drive, but tonight brother Kelly was also on hand to demonstrate some nifty night moves . And Rob Pfetzing, equally perfect in the Handicap races, gladdened the hearts of his parents, his fans, his girl, Kal-Gard and his banker by winning the H a ndica p main for the first tim e here this seaso n . The people that came from Far Away to apprecia te the Morans were quickly disappointed when Shawn made it to turn one, crashed and was excluded, and Kelly failed to transfer. Pfetzin g had a relatively easy time of it in the main, keeping it on the inside line until the checkered - not very exciting. but thoroughly convincing. Sterling Cogar came all the way from Carlsbad and the 30-yard line for second. And yo ung Rick Mill er, proving that he can turn left with the D-l guys, was good for a wh ile, but faded like a swapmeet T'-shirt on th e last lap, going from third to last. When Shawn Moran had hi s big year at Ascot in '79, he usuall y was o u tga ted but came back to pass everyone on th e outside, including one memorable night wh en he passed five riders in one turn . Now after two years in the British Speedway League, Moran can gate with the best of th em , leaving no weakness in hi s two-wheel act. Moran won his heat by a bout 10 miles after a fast trip to turn on e. Mike Bast, Dave Sims a nd Mike Faria also thrashed th eir rivals severely in the heats . As it is intended to be, the Scratch main was the best race of th e night. Faria and Bast took the lead around turn one and began to change leads. leaving Moran on the outside, eating dirt. Sims was already o ut of it. Bobbing and weaving like a box er, Shawn tried the inside and was blocked, tried the outside and couldn't get by, and even tried cutting between both Mikes. but the gap closed. On the third lap, in a spectacular move, Moran cut between both speedy Mik es and took the lead, but both caught him by turn three, pushing him outside . Moran, however, got a great corner and passed them both for good, and you could almost hear collective sighs of resignation from Bast and Fari a. Not surprising, the fans were on their feet go ing nu ts, as only speedway fan s ca n do. H ow a bou t. we mak e a deal with Sheffield of the BSL - yo u give us back Moran, and we'll give yo u anything? The Mat ch Rac e - speedway's version of hokey, big time wrestling, i.e., usually staged and phony - was . more exciting and convincing than usual. And why not? It was Moran versus Moran. After two laps it was a dead heat with Kelly crossing the line on a wh eeli e but winning by a foot two laps later. Whoa. e •• KER KER 7 S00 DEERING AVENUE. CANO GA PARK. CALIFORNIA 913 04 .
