World Team Cup Qualifier: UK round England, U.S. advance in a tie score By John Hipkiss KINGS L YNN , ENGLAND, MAY 16 England and the United States set the pace to both qualify for the Inter-continental stage of the World Team Cup Speedway Championship at Vojens, Denmark, on June 26. It was a lways going to be between th ese two nations fo r th e meet in g 's two q ualifiers, bu t rarely has th ere been such 18 ent h us ias m o n eac h side as both teams tied on 39 points at th e end of 16 excitin g ra ces. A run -ocr was a fiu in g climax as England 's Peter Co ll ins. wh o o n ly ca me to be ri ding because o f a n inj ury to Cris Morton . shot fro m th e ta pes to bea t ocr th e g u tsy cha llen ge from th e American's maximum ma n , Kell y Moran. T h ere were never mo re tha n two po in ts sepa rat ing E ng la nd a n d America throughout th e meeting as both team members gave 110% effort in their riding , with man y of th e races on ly being decided o n th e li ne. It was Kell y's day, shooti ng into a n in vin cibl e lead in the first race to set th e Am er ican team into th e ri ght groove a nd ca rry ing o n to record a max imum 12 po ints. Bru ce Penha ll a nd Sh awn Moran bo th had race wins , but th e odd man o u t was Den ni s Siga lo s wh o reco rded four seco n d p laces , yet was featured in some of the most exci ting races. H is first was when h e push ed forme r world cha mpion Peter Co llins for fou r p u lsa ting laps, forcing th e track reco rd to be broken in th e bar ga in . America went into a hal fwa y lead of j us t o ne poi nt, 20- 19. th anks to a fin e win by Pen ha ll o ver England 's Kenn y Carter. Engla nd pulled back to level th e scores a t 27 eac h in race I I after World Lon g Track Champion Mike Lee barr led to beat Si ga lo s. It wa s a fa ir y tal e endi ng to th e meeting as Engla nd needed to win the last two races to force th e run-off. In th e pen u lt imate heat , Carter ro de to a det erm ined win agai nst Siggy, an d in th e la st race Penhall had to be co nt ent with second p lace to England 's Da ve J essu p .
