Said Bryant , who first rode the bike Friday , " I' d hate it to go down to politic s 'cause my job is just to ride the bike, but you have to stay with the ru les. Unlike " typ ically boring" endurance races , the Racecr afters Kawasa ki team and the Team Hamm er Suz uki, ridden by Bruce Hamm er and john Ulrich . forged a lead with only a second or two at most separa ting them much of the time, especia lly in the ea rl y going. Howev er. an early pit stop to fix a broken sh ift lever droppe d the Kawa saki back. and Team Hamm er continued to lead as th e Bryant/Greig er Katana closed in on them and started excha nging first. Klinzm ann and Wolff made up ground , though . and got Bryant l Greige r lat e in the race and were pressuring Team Hamm er when Ulrich crashed . Klinzm ann crossed the finish line in the lead but with a dead engine . his engine having run out of gas in the last turn . Third went to Carry Andrew s and jon Woo on a Van Nuys Cyde/Derale /N D Kawasaki; they were very close to runnin g on fumes at the finish. 100km Box Stock Saturd ay's one-lap q ualifyi ng runs reveale d a surpris ing fact - the 600cc class Box Stock bikes were quicke r than their 750 and l200cc big brothers. Frank Mazur set the fast time for the 100 kilome ter Box Stock race with a 1:58.55 on his ND I Arai Kawasa ki GPz550 , an "old" twin-sh ock model no less. joe Monto ya on his Berkel ey, Yamah a Seca ยท550 was the only other.
