In the 600cc cla ss, Aaron Post wo n on a n '82 GPz550, with J oe Bruscell a and Scott H armala g iving him chase a ll th e way. On lap six Bruscella had the lea d, and Post a lmos t went down trying to pass him on the o utside of turn six. Lap seven the two were side by side, a nd H a rm al a was rig h t beh in d , dicing with Doug T oland (who hasn 't raced in a t leas t a year) . At th e end, Post got to the fla gs first foll owed by Bru scella and H armala in that order. In 600cc Box Stock, Mike Haller clawed his wa y up from the back of th e pack to tak e th e victory from lead ers Bruscella and Harmala, bu t right a fter cross ing th e finish line, Haller ran out of ga s! Nothing like cutting it clos el In mornin g p racti ce there was a rather bad crash in turn n ine as some undetected oil was on th e track, and four riders found it. Steve Sabatin i was hospitalized with a skull fracture and other asso rted injuries, but it . looks lik e he'll be OK. Rye H efley ha s a broken fem ur so he will be off bikes for a while. The other guys sustai ned j ust superficial injuries, so all in a ll, everyone was lucky this time. But turn n ine was coned off a ll day , and there was a no passing rule put in effect, just for turn n ine, because of the danger. No one else went down there for the rest of th e day . but th ere were a few minor crashes elsewhere. The turn workers did a fine job th is time of gett in g the flags out and being where they were needed right wh en they were needed . Sign-in was also run very well with Ruth Sm ith devising a new, more efficient way of doing th ings. The next ARRA race is June 6 a t Will ow Springs. For info call 8051 966-5700. CA, MAY 2 While some of th e troops follo wed the " Du nes tow n " series to Arroyo in search of the attractive paybacks, the hardcore motocrossers tackled the International trac k at Indian Dunes in the Cal ifor nia Ra cing Clu b's regular first Su nday race. Mo to one of th e Open Pro found two big bore H ondas elbo w to elbo w in the first turn. Adam Ford put his into the lea d wi th Bob Kline of North H oll ywood Ho nda momentarily in second. About halfwa y around the co urse, th ere was a series of rollers, th e last two o f wh ich co uld be shot in one big j u mp. T ha t was where Klin e moved to pass Ford. With in 20 feet of landin g was a hairpin turn. It was tim e to brak e with one foot , do wnshift with th e oth er and dr ag th e third. Things got a bit tight, but Kline pulled into th e lead ri gh t th ere. Pete Sn oneland had go tten off the line and was coming on stro ng . By the begin ning of lap two , he was look in g for a way aro u nd Ford a nd by th e end of th e lap, he found it. He th en mov ed to within firin g range of Klin e a nd waited for a break. It came in la p seven, when Kline slid out a little too wid e and Sn orteland grabbed the lead . Kline was right back in the fight a nd go t close eno ugh to Sn orteland for cli nc hes . They sparre d for three more laps until Kline was able to jab to th e in side on o ne of the man y tigh t turns and retake th e lead . Sn or teland tri ed to get back by but time was u p and Kline too k the win . Ford came in a t thi rd . Mot o two had a dej a vu beginn in g. Kline and Ford were arm in arm into th e first turn , but whe n th e d ust settled , Sn oneland had sli pped h is DG Yamaha into seco nd. And so th ey chased eac h o the r for II mor e laps. cha ngi ng nothing but the interval between them and so th ey fini shed Klin e, Snone la nd a nd Ford for th is mo to and for the overa ll or der. Randy Johnson sho t fir st in rno to one o f the 250cc P ros bu t wen t too high o n the first tu rn and Snoneland cut hi m o ff to co me o u t in th e lead. Bill Ouelett e, Cra ig Cole a nd Ga ry Ada ms a ll foll owed Snonela nd and the scram ble was on . On lap two, Cole and O uelette swapped positions a nd Cole moved up to challenge _ Sno rte la nd for th e nex t two la ps. It seemed th a t Snorteland 's bike was soundi ng a littl e raspy but Co le was th e one who suddenly started losing power. He eventually was forced to retire for the day . Oulette and Adams moved up to second and third. Snortela nd seemed to be enjoying a com fortable lead bu t O ue lette found th e boos t bu tto n on h is Su nshine Yamaha a nd bega n closing at abou t three seco nds per la p . By the whi te flag la p , he was close enough to Snorteland tha t they were simu lta neous ly ai rborne over all the ju mps. O uelett e tried th e inside, th e o utside, highside, lo wsid e a nd even th e upside but Sno rte la nd kept him o ut to tak e the moto wi n. Ada ms came in th ird. MOIO t wo wa s a nticli ma ctic. O uelett e took an immedia te lead, close ly foll owed by Snorteland and J ohnson. Ada ms gave J ohnson some bri ef dispu te in th e early laps bu t before mid-race, everyon e had settle d o n th e fin ishing order of Oulet te, Sn orteland and Johnson. The bett er second moto fin ish gave Oulette th e firs t p lace money. Pa t O 'D onnel took the l25cc Pro lead shortly after the start a nd went straigh t to th e win o f rnoto one. Ed Eckert ca me aro u nd in second a nd Bob Byrn e was alread y challenging. In lap two, Byrn e stuffed his Simi Cycle Suzu ki pa st Eckert to hold seco nd to the end. T ha t was th e story for the rem aining 10 laps. Mot o two had somew ha t mor e activity. Byrn e too k th e immedi at e lead wi th Ecker t nex t a nd Paul Arnold in th ird . O 'Donnell go t a dead last start, bu t explo ded a nd caug h t up to th e pack . On lap two , he pa ssed th ree riders in less than two minu tes to move up to seco nd. By lap three he was breathing o n Byrn e's heels and, th ro win g it side ways in the sweeper at the end o f th e co urse, passed Byrn e by righ t in front of th e scori ng to wer to stan th e fourth lap in th e lead. Byrn e tri ed to ca tch up but O'Do nnell was ou tdistanci ng everyone today and went on for th e wi n and firs t overa ll for the da y. Wi th two seconds, Byrn e go t seco nd money. It was Conney's first appearance a t his home track . Ba rona Oak s, in qui te a whi le, bu t he wasted no tim e in mastering th e man y jumps and whoop-de -dos graded in by trackman Don Sh irl ey. T he 125cc Motorcycle classes were highligh ted by the largest field of Expe rt riders in recent history. After four torrid rnotos, it was Billy Evans going two for two over fellow Honda rider Mitch Palmer with a very close Bobby Vrh el (Yam) in third. - In th e Modifieds, it looked to be Evans o nce again as he grabbed the fir st mot o over Palmer, but in th e second go 'round, Evans developed a case of " fall-iris," allowing the Oceanside Honda rider , Palmer , to cru ise home the wi n ne r over a hard charging Vrh eI: Th e 125cc Inte rm ediat es sa w another split as Suzuki-mounted Rich Schulenberg grabbed th e Stocks, and Bobby Voorhees (Escondido Kaw ) went two for two in th e Modifieds. Voorhees actua lly had three wins on the da y, but a DNF in th e first mota of th e Stocks dropped him out of conten tion. Next ra ce, Voorhees will join the big Expert field , with Schulenberg only about a race behind. The Novices were as usual very competitive. wit h two riders scoring career fir sts. With a $500 purse up for grabs, to be sp li t between the 250 a nd Open Expert classes on both the short track a nd TT co urses, th e com pe ti tion was tought and th e anticipation great as riders ran for that checkered flag. In the Trophy dash, Marlow Parks grabbed th e win, hi s third such victory for the pa st th ree consecu tive races. The Open Expert short trac k main saw some tough riding bet ween Parks a nd Bob Russel l. Pulling away from the rest of the pa ck ea rly on, th e contest between Russ ell and Parks becam e a race of men alo ne, as each rod e iden tica l machines. Russell found his way to pull a head of Parks on the straightaways only to find Parks right
