Factory Rider GP
By Loretta Pipkin
LIVE OAKS SPRINGS, CA. APR. IS
Lars Larsson and Rob bie Nolan
each captured two overall wins
in the Marty T ripes' Factory
Rider Grand P rix, held in the
Cleveland Forest. A very tight course
was the feature of this event, the first
in a six-race series.
The first race run was the 125cc
event, and Kearney Mesa Yamaha's
Nolan led with Rory Chenowth and
Ed Foland chasing. Chenowth, a
Novice rider competing on a l 25cc
machine for the first time, hung
tough and finished second ahead of
Fo land. Foland's pretty wife Pam
finished second in the Amateur class
behind Bob Bell. However, she'll be
retiring for awhile to await the birth
of the newest addition to the Foland
clan.
Nolan , feeling triumphant , ran
straight to the 250cc race and led it
start to finish. Novice Todd Kennedy
turned in a gallant ride to finish
second overall after dicing with Experts Matt Hope and Paul Edd y.
Larsson turned in h is two victories
in the Vet and Senior races . In the
Senior class, Bill Silverthorne took
the early lead with Husky-mounted
Larsson chewing on his heels. For
two laps through the water, jumps
and tight .turns, they were Siamese
twins. "Into a turn I was going for
the inside," said Larsson later, " Silverthorne overshot the turn and h is
bike stalled for a moment. I screamed
Thank You ' as I passed." Larsson
eventually finished one minute ahead
of Silverthorne. Bob Mayn ard took
th ird with desert rivals W.e. Thornton and Roger Adsit fourth and fifth.
Five minutes after the finish of th e
Senior race, Larsson p ulled up to the
start line in the Vet race. He led this
one start to fin ish, with Monte Lee
and R.D. Tuzinsky wa iting for a mistake that never came. They finished
1-2-3.
In the Open class a red flash went
by on a Honda. It was young Lloyd
Thomas from Escondido. Larsson
joined the ranks of Chip Howell,
Mike Rose and Ra ndy Hollenbeck
for this one. Thomas was to crash
two times in two la ps and still hold
the lead - "He went past like your
paycheck," said Larsson. However ,
T homas had to pit and try and fix his
twisted handlebars. Th is put h im
way down and didn't solve the problem , so his dad pulled him in. T hat
gave the lead to Howell , who kept it
for first overall in front o f Rose and
Leon Livin gston . The strain of ru nni ng th ree races in a row finally tol d
on Larsson, wh o reti red on the th ird
la while running sixth.
