H e rode with a n injured shou lder, and although he wasted three bikes and fell heavil y on his shoulde r, he returned to the line each time . Whenever Cook and Woods were on the track together, th ere was never a dull mom ent. T his was the firs t night of First, Second a nd T h ird Division racing for Juni or Speedway, with two riders from Divisions O ne and Two and one rider fro m Division Three, transferring to o ne main event. Thirteenyear-old Jordan Du nca n wo n th e main all th e way from the 30-yard line. .Pl acing seco nd was " Sha des of Wild Bill ," 10-year-old Bobby Cody , followed by l l -year-old Jessie Finch. The feature ma tch race pl aced Cook versus Woods wit h Cook trying th e outside and Woods taking it by in ches fro m the inside. It was so close th ey di d it again, exchanging leads several tim es but Woods proved tru e and finished first aga in. The Third Division main started off with a bang, as usual, 'with most the field going down in turn three. Bob Ott ca me o ut first o n th e restart wi th Steve Murray in hot p ursu it, trying th e ou tside. O tt held o n to h is lead ta ki ng th e win, with Mu rr ay second a nd T om Conrad thi rd. Di vision Two's main event was one Rick Mill er is not goi ng to forget. Wit h Wes Randolph getting ou t first, Miller, from the 30-yard line, ma nage d second pl ace by the en d of th e first lap , with Mik e Mazzaca ne in th ird. Mille r bega n to pu t the sq ueeze on Randol ph a nd went around him on th e wh ite flag lap . Randol ph tried to move over a nd sh ut the doo r in the last tu rn but wai ted too long. He moved over into Rick 's side a nd went down. Miller stayed upright, but hi s kill switch ball was pulled out, kill ing th e engine. H e trie d to push across, bu t in spi te of h is large lead, Mazzacane zipped across the line first. Tha t ga ve Mazzacane three main events in a row at Cos ta Mesa, followed to night by Miller a n d Ed Cast ro . A new star came o ut tonight in First Division . Twenty-on e-yea r-old Guy Ermolenko, after on ly one year of speed way competition, made h is debut in First Division and q ua lified for th e H andicap mai n. He came out of the gate fast and first from the 20yard line. Moo se Kennedy was right beh ind followed by Jimmy La wson . Ermo len ko and Kennedy ba ttled for th e lead, but Guy would no t gi ve up a nd made no fat al mistakes. Errnolen ko took the win over Kennedy. J ohn Cook showboa ted his way into third, bu t th e leaders were too far gone. Sterlin g Cogar d rew th e po le in th e Scra tch main with heavy competitio n in the o ther slot s. john Sandona , Ala n Christian and Joh n Cook com pl eted th e li ne-up. The ta pes flew up , and Sandona got o ut first, bu t Christia n, surp risingly, took to th e ou tside an d g ra bbed the lead. O nce Christi an found hi s lin e, th ere wa s no ca tching him .
