It gave riders a preview of what's 10 come in the months ahead. One of th e more exciting races of the day. was produced by the 250cc Novices. When the gate dropped for the start of the first rnoto, it was Ken Odra (Yam) who captured the allimportant h o lesh o t, Hoping to deprive Odra of his lead were Ruben Alvarado (Suz), Jim Cogley (Yam) and Larry Dimmit (Suz). With his gonzo riding style , Odra extended his lead within a few laps, but Alvarado and Cogley were still within striking distance. Cogley began to put the pres sure on Alvarado by the midway point. Cogley snuck by Alvarado, then inherited the top spot after Odra bit th e dust. After getting off to a so-so start, Paul Burval (Suz) let his presence be known after he labored his way through the pack to stuff by Alvarado. Burval the n reeled in Cogley and passed the leader for the eventual win. At the start of moto two, it was Bob Megdal who pocketed the holeshot whi le being heavi ly pursued by Alvarado, Odra and BurvaI. By the end of the first lap, Odra and Burval had both managed to get around Alva rado and MegdaI. Alvarado took over the third spot a lap later. A short battle had developed between Odra and Burval, but Burval had taken over the · lead by the third la p . Alvarado then set his sights o n Odra . T he Su zuki pilot took contro l of second halfway through the race. Soon after, Cogley took advantage of a tiring Odra for third. From there, it was a matter of just staying upward until the end. Burval took the overall while Alvarado captured second, and Cogley settled for th ird. Although Fabian Bucheli (Suz) did _ not win a 1JI0tQ,.he didcapture the .. overall win in the highly competitive 125cc Beginner class. Bucheli, in the first moto, had to pass seven riders to ta ke second to Chris Dominquez (Yam). Dominquez also had to make a come-from-behind ride for the win. Third went 10 Marlon Arana (Hon) while Paul Wright (Suz) accepted fourth. In the second rnoto, Mike Daversa (Yam) had to fight back Bucheli throughout most of the moto. Daversa held on to take the victory. But Bucheli 's second was enough to capture the overall. It was almost a full house in the Mini Beginner class, but in the end it was Walter Armendariz (Suz) who came out on top, Armendariz rode two flawless motos towards the win. Taking second to Armendariz was Yamaha-mounted Andy Rainer. Rainer took third in the first rnoto while he bested that score by one in moto two . A 5-3 combo gave third to Billy Oberg (Suz), and a consistent 4-4 tally gave Honda of Redland 's Davi d Sharp fourth. Results PEE WEE: 1. Stophon Hongoveld (Suz); 2. Dolo Smart (Yom~ 3.
