CN 00 0") Jeff Conlin spent his birthday in the Ascot winner's circle. fraction of a second longer to capture the holeshot narrowly ahead of Brand. Griewe did all he could to shake Brand, but he was glued to Griewe's rear fender. At times the two were side by side, but Griewe kept control of his narrow lead. Lurking closely behind in third was John Greenway (Kaw); he was waiting for any slight mistake by the leaders, but unfortunately for Greenway there were none. When the white flag appeared, the two leaders were within whispering distance of each other. Brand did all he could to get by, but Griewe held on for a narrow victory. Greenway settled for third while Pomona Valley Yamaha's Jack Scott took fourth. Brand knew he had to win the second moto if he wanted to take the overall, but Griewe knew that too. At the start of the second rnoto, it was Griewe who jammed into the early lead followed by Brand and Greenway. The three leaders began a fight for the led, but Greenway got a bit over-rambunctious in the supercross whoops and went down, dropping back to last. All eyes were on Griewe and Brand. The race was a photocopy of the first, but with only a few turns remaining in the race, Brand had stuffed his Suzuki underneath Griewe taking a half-bikelength lead. Griewe then shut the door on Brand, keeping his lead intact. The win went to Griewe only inches ahead of Brand. Third went to SCOtt while Greenway labored his way into fourth. Alan McCown took his C&:H Kawasaki into the winner circle in the 250cc Intermediate class after he posted a 3-1 combination for the win. Dennis Wooldridge, riding for Skip Fordyce Honda, traded 1-3 scores with McCown, but unfortunately for Wooldridge, it was in the wrong combination. Wooldridge took second overall while Rick Beingesser (Kaw) settled for third. In the high school competition, it was another match-up between Upland's Pat Weber (Suz), Moreno Valley's Brian Griewe (Yam) and Ken Campbell (Suz), It was Weber who took command. He took wins in both the 250 and 500cc Senior classes. Griewe took second overall in the 500cc Seniors, just ahead of teammate Campbell. But, in the 250s, Campbell took revenge by taking • second ahead of Griewe. A perfect I-I combination in the 125cc Novice class gave Upland's ~8 Rick Lane (Suz) the overall. Next round again, Bubba dusted 'em while Rosa and Klatt fought out second spot, it was good watching for all the spectators. In the Open class it was almost the same scenario, except Rosa got his second and third dicing it out with Tommy Walton. Back a bit, Danny Perkins and Roger Thompson were having a good time, joined by Pete Hames who was a bit off form or saving some for the rest of the weekends' racing. The last round. though, Walton had second all the way through it. with Rosa pulling up alongside several times, but Tommy always managed to be first at the jump, and that, of course, is the secret of the Ascot TT track, especially the shortened version of it.
