ABC's WIde World of Sports was at San Jose to tape the races, and the telecast will air Saturday, May B, Check local listings for time and channel. John Silberbaur of Grand Prix Plastics and Jim Fi lice, Sr. are raising funds to help defray the medical expenses of Willie Crabbe. who was injured critically at San Jose. Craig Vetter announced that his annual High Mileage contest will take place this year on July 10, with a ride up the coast of California to coincide with the Laguna Seca road races. We'll have more details on that in next week's issue. Franco Unci ni (Suz) wo n the Su nday, May 2, Austrian G P 's 500cc race that ended in rain. Barr y Sheene (Yam) was second with Kenny Roberts and the new Yamaha V-4 third. Freddie Spencer was running second, but DNF when his Honda-S expired. Randy Mamola (Suz) suffered an injured foot in practice and was last off the line. Mamola finished seventh. Defending World Champion Marco Lucchinelli (Hon) tried to pass leader Uncini on the next to last lap, only to run 011 the track and crash. He reportedly suffered broken bones in his foot, but is expected to compete in next weekend's French GP, the third round of the World Championship Road Race Series . Point standings now show Roberts with 25, Sheene 24, and Uncini 23. Eric Saul (Che) edged Anton Mang (Kaw) in the 350cc GP, while Angel Nieto (Gir) won the 125cc GP. Rolf Biland and Kurt Waltisburg (LCR) won the Sidecar race . Su zuki 's Andre Vromans won both motos of the May 2 500cc MXGP in Ho lla nd . Second overall went to Eddy Sterckx (Mai) via his 3-3 fi nish, and Jaak Van Velthoven (KTM ) was th ird overall w ith a 4 -4. Suzuki ' s Brad Lackey posted a 7 -2 per f orm ance, wh ile fellow American Gary Semics turned in a 6-9 . Semics got t he holeshot in the f irst mota and led half the race . Defending World Champ Andre Malherbe (Han) crashed Saturd ay and separated his shoulder, and although he rode both motos on Sunday. he crashed out of each. Vromans now leads the point standings with 43, followed by Lackey (3 3) and Malherbe (3 0). Eric Geboers (Suz) used a 1·1 score to top the Italian I25cc MX GP on May 2. Michele R ina ld i (Gil ) ran 2-2 for second overall followed by Corrado Maddii (Gi l) with a 3-3. Marc Velkeneers had a 7-DNF day, but retained the points lead with 83 over Geboers with 73 and Rinald i with 69. 2 Terry Vance (Suz) won both Pro Stock and Top Fuel at the May 1-2 NMRA Southeastern National Drags at Florida 's Gainesville Raceway . Vance topped Mike Keyte (Kaw) for his Pro Stock win while Frog Thacker (Kaw) redlighted away his chances in the Top Fuel final. Cra ig Burns (Kaw) topped Bo O'Brochta (Kaw ) in Funny Bike while Rick Stetson (Suz) won over Jeff Reel (Suz) in Pro Camp. Jeff Yeager (Yam) took the Super Modified win over Joe Kon ig (Kaw). Husq varna 's Kris Bigelow went home from the Pontiac Supercross wit h an inj ured ankle and was a no-show at the St. Peter sbu rg Nationa l MX. Bigelow hopes to make the Kansas City Supercross on May 8. St. Petersburg 1 25cc National winner Johnny O'Mara felt he de served a raward for his recent top finishes. He bought a $250,000 house in Simi Valley, CA for a retreat during the off season. Supercross points leader Donnie Hansen is into contract negotiations with Honda for '83. Hansen's new salary should hit the six figure mark this time around. Kawasaki factory MXer Tom Benolkin suffered a rupture near his liver during the second 250cc National mota at St. Petersburg. Benolkin underwent emergency surgery right after the races on May 2 , and is in stable condition as of presstime. He plans to return home shortly, so drop him aline at 77B1 Groveland Road, Minneapolis, MN 55432. Yamaha's Jimmy Filice practiced at the San Jose Mile, but that was as far as he got. "He sucked an exhaust valve," explained Yamaha Racing Manager Ken Clark. " H e ran two practice sessions and was doing very well, running 37s and riding with Randy Goss, although he was a little down on power there, but not bad. That's the first motor we've exploded in 14 months of racing." Husky's M ike Melton picked up the w in at the Rattlesnake National Enduro at Crescent City, CA, May 2, losing one second , Jack Penton (Kaw) and Mark Hyde (Hus) also lost but a single second, but they picked i t up at the second tiebreaker check, whereas Melton lost his second at the first tiebreaker. Terry Cunningham (Hus) was fourth with four seconds lost, and Drew Smith (Kaw) lost 12 for fifth. The original course was under five feet of snow, so the alternate, and easier course was used , Coverage next week. Ho nda, which fielded a four-man tea m at the Sacramento Mi le, had on ly Mike Kidd an d Scott Pearson riding the NS750sat San J ose. "That's the way it's going to be until we have the m competitive ," said Pearson, adding, "We do n't have the manpower to keep all those wheels runn ing a nd make them fast at the same time. Mike and I have the most experience on the miles and half miles." . U.S. Suzuki announced last week that Young and Rubicam -los Angeles is their new advertising agency, Y8tR has been involved in working with Suzuki on a business development and advartising project over the last several months. The new appointment covers responsibility for advertising collateral and assignments in .sales promotion. The appointment officially began Apr. 15. Those enduro riders planning to postenter at the D·36 Little Polecat Enduro on June 13 should not follow the directions to the event that are on the flier. The Little Polecat Enduro, a lso part of the Golden State Championship Enduro Series, has been moved from Long Ba rn to Deer Creek, CA (near Twain Harte). The event hosts, The Merced Dirt Riders, had to move the enduro because of deer fawning and land use problems at the Lo ng Barn area. Although the enduro name is new, the cl ub wants everyone to know tha t the club is not. The Merced Dirt R iders are the same club that has hosted the Clearcreek Enduro for years . The Merced Dirt Riders have moved their enduro north, to the site of the old Winter Enduro, to reduce the traveling distance of the majority of northern California enduro riders. The Hilltoppers MC . will be hosting a grand prix w ith a 37-mile loop through the Mexican co untryside and the streets of Rosa rito Beach. The date of the event is May 16, and for a $22 entry plus $6 in insurance, you can have an enjoyable ride in Baja - less than 30 miles from the border. Clarks Branch in Roseburg, O R, hosted the Yamaha Perpetual Gold Cup MX Series May 2. Jim Anderson (Yam) came out the big winner for the day by topping the 125 and 250cc P ro classes. The los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation's Baldwin Hills OHV Park has been included in the '82-'83 state OHV Fund grants budget recommendation . The project calls for a 171Aacre site in the city of Baldwin Hills, bordered by the 10 and 606 freeways, The county has negotiated with the land owner, received various permits, and has begun the environmental documentation process. State OHV funds in the amount of $876,272 have been committed and the county is prepared to finalize the plans and begin design and development. The plans call for the park to handle motorcycles up to 250cc, and de ve lopment may include skill level t racks, fencing, pit area s, parking, access, control tower. picnic area . concession building, and restrooms, Now the Parks and Recreat ion folks are trying to get in touch w ith interested ,clubs concerning nominations of representatives who would be active members of a 10-12 person advisory group. This group would work with the Paries and Recreation department to finetune the plan. The " gr a nd daddy" of Supercross, Mike Goodwin 's annual bash at the Los Angeles Coliseum, is set for July 17. It will be sponsored by Miller Beer, but it could be the end of an era. Following the '82 event, the Coliseum's playing surface will be rennovated for the '84 Olympics, and that could keep Supercross out of the Coliseum forever. Speaking of Supercross, Stadium Motosports announced that the season-ender at San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium is on for Saturday night, Nov. 6 . It will also be sponsored by Miller.
