Hillside reg ulars figured, because of the roughness of the hill. tha t the superlight speedway-engined rigs, of which there were two . wou ld do well, but neither pl aced well . AMA number one pl ate hol der for 250cc climbers, Charl es Ford of Co lorad o , put in a notable climb in the Exhibitio n class. H e urged h is '81 RM 250 up to 960 feet! T hat ride put h im somew here in the top 20 in the Exhibition class. H e picked up th ird in the 250-37Occ Expert class with a rubber tire on the same bike. Some riders who had a spot of trouble in Exhibition took home prizes in the 751-0pen class. Last year's champ Roessler went 901 feet with a rubber tire on his lOOOcc Honda, only 170 less than his best run with paddles. Indiana's Tom Elmore got 990 feet in Exhibition but did not place. His 746-foot run in th e Expert class gav e him second. Will Alford was th ird. Dick DeRosa' s 515cc Yamaha took the Expert 501-750cc honors over T exan Mike Polley's Kawasaki 750 tri p le. Ron Hopkin s of Washington was third on ano ther big-bore Yamaha thumper. One of th e most interesti ng ride rs of the day. certai nly on e of the sho rtest, was Travis Whitlock. Travis is 12 years old and rides a 465 Yamaha and a YZSO in hill clim bs. In local climbs, he frequently wi ns th e 125cc classon h is extended swi ngarm mini. H is first ride netted h im 765 feet a nd th ird pl ace in the 371-500cc No vice class . Wh en all the bikes had ru n, Kerry . Peterson ro lled hi s big H arley to the line again. H e fired it u p, saw that on e exhaust pipe was hanging bu t couldn't be repaired the n , then revved the engine a few times and rocketed over the hill again! H is time was an awesome 36.1748 seconds, more th a n 43 seconds faster than the o nly other rider to cres t the hill. He com men ted, " I didn 't get on it really hard. I wasn 't trying to set a time record, just get over the top. No sense breaking it RUB ELBOWS WITH JAY (SPRI NGSTEEN AND RANDY GOSS n o w ." Peterso n was th e del ight of fan s who co nsi der Widowmaker more of a " hap pen ing" than a race. The Salt Lake City newspapers called it one of th e rites of sprin g, and it remains on e of th e last grea t motorcycle classics.
