II Suzuki of Van Nuys ' John Cushingham captured the win in the I25cc Novice class by virtue of fast riding and bit of good 84 luck today a t DeAnza Cycl e Park's motocross. Cush ingham had to contend with the likes or Kevin Montgomery (Ka w) an d Francisco Bucheli (Suz). At th e start or moto one. it was Montgomery who roosted into th e lead in ch es a head or Lance Gorton (Ka w) a n d Cushingham. The th ree top contenders engaged in an all-out dogfight for th e lead. Gorton was the first to ge t stuck down by bad luck when he went down a t the hal£wa y point. Nex t it was Montgomery who succumbed to greml ins a fter he dropped out or co ntention a lap la ter. But for Cush ingham, it was a chan ce to breathe easier since h e in h eri ted a comfortable lead. K.D . Cox (Kaw) round himself in second while Alex Lopez (Yam) was handed third . In th e en d . Cushingham wheeli ed past th e chec kered nag Iollowed by Cox and Lopez. At the start or moto two. Montgomer y showed th e rest or the pack how to go a bo u t stealing th e hol esho t. Takin~ lessons behind were Larry Benedict (Yam), Gorton a nd Cushingham. Midway through the moto, Montgomery had managed a sizeable lead while both Cushingham and Bucheli finally found a way past Benedict. Montgomery was cruising to a sure victory. but Cushingham knew he had th e overa ll in the bag i£ h e didn 't rail or break. Montgomery won th e battle but lost the war to Cushi ngham. Both Cox a nd Lopez fell victi m to th e dr ead ed DNF, so Buchel i ca p tu red seco nd overall wh ile Montgomery sett led for a content third -, Suzuki or Riversid e' s Dave Pettigrew (Suz ) had to swa t orr the pesty Mark Barn es (Yam) or Barn es ' Yamaha to capture the cash in th e 250cc Pro class. In th e first rnoto, Pettigrew grabbed the early lead rollowed by Barnes a n d Mark Ellis (Yam ). Barnes stayed close, waiting for the slightest mistake by th e leader. But Pettigrew kept hi s cool. Barnes sett led Ior second wh ile Ell is took th ird. Barnes rocketed int o th e front or th e pack a t the start of th e seco nd rnoto whil e pursued by Ellis and Pettigrew. With five laps remainin g. Pettigrew began to make h is move by passing Ellis, then se llin g after Barnes. The two leaders duell ed , but Pettigrew snuck by while th e two were wea ving through slower traffic. In the first rnoto of th e Mini No vice class, it wa s Terry Szucsko (Yam ) who grabbed the holeshot , a nd he n ever looked back as he went o n to take th e win. Roy Chambers (Yam) followed in secon d while Robert Cadwell had to right back Suzukimounted Mik e Mich etti for th ird. With only two laps rem aining in th e seco n d moto, Szu csk o: pa ssed Ch ambers to capture th e win a nd th e ov erall. Cadwell took third a fte r Michetti dropped out with a seized motor. Doug Davison (Suzl; 3. Jim Pearson (SOl). (Yem~ Nolin powered his Yamaha orr the line and through the fir st turn , taking the first moto lead over Ray T etherton, Joe Bond an d Terry Murra y. Murray moved into third on th e seco n d lap when Bond fell a n d DNF th e moto a nd th e day. T etherton caught and passed Nolin on th e downhill on lap rive. Nolin co ntin ued to rail off th e pace as h e dropped to th ird behind Murray. Nolin said la ter, " I sta rt ed to get lighth eaded and had to slow down or wreck." By the 10th lap, Nolin had cleared hi s head en ou gh to come back and repass Murray for second. Tetherton held onto a large lead that he had opened aft er pa ssing Nolin for th e win , In the second rnoto, Nol in quickly jumped out in front ahead of Tetherton and Murray. T etherton was pressuring Nolin Ior the lead till the sixth lap when he was no longer able to hold the pace. Nolin slowly pulled awa y to an eight second lead over Tetherton and 14 over Murray by the checkers. After th e first lap or the 250cc Pros, it was Jeff Lucas leading off or DeviI's Drop ahead or Micky Dymond, Eric Baker, Brian Pitzen and Richard Mannschreck. Halfway through the third lap. Baker held the gas on as he new by Dymond on the downhill, taking over second. Mov ing into fifth on lap four was Rich Grafton. passing Mannschreck on the sixth lap. Baker moved into the lead when Lucas hit a haybale coming off the ledge and was forced to sit out a lap before remounting. Dymond dropped out or second when he Iell on the eighth lap. dropping to the back or the pack. Grafton closed a six second gap to pass Pitzen on the ninth lap. Pitzen continued to dice with Grafton till the II th lap when he repassed Grafton , regaining second. Bak er opened a comfortable lead to take the w in over Pitzen. Grafton. Mannschreck and Frank LaVres, who moved up to the top rive after railing at th e sta rt . In rnoto two. Baker took the holeshot over Dymond, Lucas, Grafton and Pitzen. The pack rode unchanged till Dymond started to put some distance between him and Bak er . Gralton wasn 't as lucky with Lucas regaining third on lap nine. On the 10th lap, Dymond started having unknown engine troubles and pulled into the pits on the next lap, moving everyone up one. On the last lap, Lucas passed Baker and took it in Ior the win with Baker holding onto second Ior the overall. Finishing third in a tie-breaker Ior second overall was Grafton , holdin g of£ a last lap charge by Pitzen who was third overall. Mannschreck rounded out th e top five. Resu lts 125PRO: 1. II In the fourth leg of the Arizona State Championship MX series, the most im por tant thing became the point standings. Out or 19 125cc No vices, only one will become th e next Arizona State Champ. With this in mind, th e riders all jammed down th e straight at Canyon Raceway to get to th e first turn first, but Mark Moen pulled it w it h Ed Harrington a nd Ed Pomeroy following. Honda rider Moen lost it at Death Pit a n d made th e mistake or reentering the track a t a different position, a definite TKO in motocross. It looked like the race would be left up to Harrington and Pomeroy, but a neversay-dierider named Keith Nielsenjumpcd into third. Trying to make up time sometimes means taking chances and getting squirrelly. Nielsen lost it at the bottom or th e tower a nd dropped to fifth, but quickly made up the time and ended up second in moto one. Moen did it again with Nielsen and Dallas Brown behind. Nielsen plastered Moen's back wheel but waited until the third lap to put him away. Meanwhile. Jem Hassan slid by Brown to take over third.
