APR. 23 The weekly Ascot half mile had a "slow" track, an overabundance of Junior riders and time clocks that were misbe- 30 having. It also had some very compet itive racing. Going by time trial times, some of the quickest Juniors were offered a chance to ride with the Experts and Pe te Hames, Scott Podergois and Don Howard accepted the offer. They got a full taste of what the Expert class is really like and valuable experience. Mike Garrison new off the penalty line in the first Expert heat to arrive in turn one first followed by Steve Morehead, Steve Oort and Ted Boody. Garrison was having the time of his life keeping the highly ranked rider beh ind. and when Morehead eased on by in the north turn by going down lower, Mike just gassed it and took the lead back again. He, Morehead and Oor t were the direct transfers. The second heat looked a bit like a street fight. Rod Sullivan and Billy Crabbe were the quickest off the line. One rider fell off in turn one but as he got himself clear the race continued. with the order reading Crabbe, Mike Inderbitzen, Sullivan and John Bur- nell. Inderbiuen and Sullivan were practically glued togrher a couple of laps, and then all three of them, with Crabbe firmly in the lead just switched second, third and fourth between them, elbow to elbow. It ended Crabbe, Burnell, Sullivan and In-: derbitzen. The semi was the last chance, and off shot Pete Hames with the lead followed by Ted Boody. Those two didn't change but right behind it was back and forth between Inderbitzen, Don Howard, and SCOll Podergois. They finished in that order but for several laps they were never in the same spot as they were the lap before. The Trophy Dash riders got a beautifully even start. and away they went. Oort, Sullivan, Morehead and Burnell. Morehead grabbed the lead and took off with it. Sullivan finished second and Burnell got by Oort for third. In the main Garrison was into turn one first but exited, Steve Morehead was out of it in front. Behind him came Sullivan, Burnell and Crabbe. Crabbe probed a couple of times as to where he should pass, then seeing his chance, went from fifth to third in one swoop in the north turn. Boody was moving up too , and was by Sullivan to tuck in behind Burnell. Burnell left the door open in turn four and Boody sailed through to get into fourth. Morehead was still running hard and strong up front, but Crabbe was now working on Garrison, finally pass ing him in turn two . Eventually he was in second, while Boody had gotten by Garrison for third and around they went for the last lap. Crabbe had such a drive going and so did Boody, that a scant wheel length separated them at the nag. And our fast Juniors? Pete Hames was seventh behind Rod Sullivan, and Podergois and Howard were I I th and 12th. The crowd of Juniors were all desperately trying to do good so they 'd get an invitation to the San Jose Mile. Derek Land had the first heat lead but up came Emory Gray, riding high and wide and passing them left and right until he made it over the finish line ahead of Land by a couple of inches. Other direct transfers were Tommy Walton and Danny Moore, Jimmy Rosa and Rob Ely, in a race which was the fastest Junior heat and saw Ely lose his transfer spot for a bit to John Mathers when he went too high and Mathers skidded by. Steve Karsten won the semi, then came John Mathers who had the lead until Steve shot by; David Rosa and Mark Key. Rosa tried for Mathers' second several times but couldn't just quite do it . At the start of the main, practically trying to start themselves but eventually they were all away with Rob Ely in front, and Emory Grdy just hurling himself around the north turn behind to catch up and catch up he did, right into the lead spot. Tommy Walton was doing great but had a quick trip into the pit when a coil wire came adrift, he got back into the race hopelessly behind but kept his effort going as strong as it always was. At about halfway the run down was Gray, Danny Moore and Jim. Rosa. Moore was really dashing but leaving doors open all over the place. Steve Karsten got into it and for a while all of them except for Gray were shuffling positions around like mad, even to the point of coming out of the turn three abreast. On one lap, Rosa on that great handling Maico was second but he didn't stay there; he ended up fourth behind Moore and Karsten. Doug Chandler maintained his winning streak in Novice main events by gelling to the front at the first opportunity. Robert Land nearly looped it on the starting line but brought it back down and rode off after them. With Chandler in front it was Jim Toews, Darren Hulbert and Land behind. Springman was forced out with mechanical troubles, while Chandler had first locked up, as did Hulbert with second place. Toews got a drive going trying for that third over Land, but just couldn't bring it off. There will be no half mile on Apr . 3D, but there will be one May 7. Results TROPHYDASH: 1. S _ MOle_IH·Dt 2.
