Barnell provided th e drama in the seco nd ha lf of the moto as he got into a tank-slapper-turned -endo in the ro ugh sweeper opposite th e announcin g sta n d. He rem ounted in third. but a stop to stra ig h ten the bars left him fifth . Ward was right th ere to grab the lead an d fin ished wi th a good cushion over O ' Ma ra , Hannah , Gi bso n a nd Barnell. The O 'Sh ow gra nd openi ng was a ho leshot at the drop of th e seco nd gate. Ward o nce again pu t the factory Kaw asaki into seco nd, G ibson was th ird, th en Barnell, H olland and Denton. Hannah hi t the firs t turn in 10th bu t would sta rt th e seco nd lap in seventh. Barn ell used h is nemesis sweeper to put Gibson behind him a n d dispatch ed Ward soo n a fter on th e first la p, a n d it looked lik e th e Bomber was back. The 0 ' Show slip ped in th e ratings whe n Barnell took his acc us tom ed point posit ion on the fourth circuit. Excep t for Turner a nd Su zukimounted Ch ris Heisser moving into th e top 10, positions remained largely the same until the 18th lap when Barnell a nd the sweeper got together again - th e entrance this time letting Ward zip into the lead for a seco n d tim e. If posit ions remained as they were, Ward would take hi s first National wi n. Ward and Barnell ca me out of th e back section with Barney closing a t a n a ma zin g - for anyone else - ra te o f speed. O 'Ma ra came o u t o f th e woods late and didn 't look good. Barn ell recovered all the grou n d he had lost, and when Ward' s Kawasaki swa p ped a bit in a turn, Barnell was by a nd flyin '. Ward fell on the final lap, but lost no positions. H ansen too k G lover on lap seven, a n d posit ions remained the same until lap 14 whe n j ohnso n swa p pe d into a bank of di rt in a rough back section straight. T he fall , which johnson wo ul d say lat er "too k a lot out of me," drop ped h im to fourt h . At the finish, the or der read Keylon, H ansen , G love r a nd Da vid Ba iley. johnson was fifth . The second rnot o was all Do nni e Hansen; he lived up to h is nickname, po wered away from th e field and was never headed. The race was not a runaway by any means as Glover sta rte d th ird and was on Ha nsen 's fender befor e th e seco nd lap was comp lete. At th e sta rt, H ansen was shadowed by Tarantino, Glover, Ste ve Martin, Keylon, Bailey and local Dan Conwa y. Bro c moved into seco nd, five seco nds off o f Hansen's pace. Keylon seemed to catch fire temporarily and shot past about four riders in one la p to take third, but the first moto had taken its toll, a n d h e eventually faded to eigh th a t the flag. ' T m j ust starti ng to get o n a serious trai ni ng program ," he said. " It's not goi n g to hap pen overn ig ht ." Six tee n minut es into th e race , G lover made th e first of hi s ser ious charges a t H ansen , but the Ho nd a ri der hun g to ugh, riding ex treme ly smooth ly and using his bi ke's hea lthy kick ou t of the deep loam corners. From th e 35-mi n u te mark, Gl over stayed wi th in a second of H ansen whi le the crowd swayed like th e tide from fence to fen ce. Glover charged the last few laps and came within mere feet of Hansen 's fender in the last turn but to no avai l. Hansen took a well deserved win fol lowed by Glover, Bailey, Martin and Johnson. Glover's second gave him th e unofficial points lead by one point. Hansen wa s h is usual reserv ed self sayin g only th a t "We chan ged • tires; it seemed to help." Results 125 NATIONAL: 1.
