Clements, Conway cruise to wins at Texas MX Series round two By Lisa M ilcich HOUSTON, TX, APR, 4 Round two of the annual Texas MX Series was put on at Rio Bravo today and will move on to Conroe Easter weekend. 44 Terry Thomas showed Mike Clement and Rickey Glaser how to lead the pack off the line in the 125cc Expert class. G laser a ttern pted 10 pass on the outside of Clement, yet was cUI off several times till he squeezed by in a left -bander. Clement immediately returned the favor a t the bottom of the hill. This duo remained inseparable for several laps. Behind them Steve Gauthier stayed in front of Jerry Surber till the fifth lap when they exchanged places. Thomas started pulling away from Clement by the sixth lap. Glaser was still racking his brains out trying 10 out-think Clement on his lines . Surber stamped out his thoughts and set him back to fourth before the white flag came out. Thomas kept his front place position 10 the biller end as Surber picked away at Clement, Glaser pulled up the rear, and Gauthier finished fifth. Thomas thought he had a clear line around the first corner of the second moto, but Glaser and Clement proved him wrong as David Myres and Surber followed along. Sixth through eighth spots were held by Kris Wills, Barry Henry and Alley Semar. Glaser had a good lead on Clement by the second lap as Thomas was edging up closer behind him, Myres remained in fourth contending with Surber every step of the way , Semar had passed Henry and Wills; Surber put Myres behind him a lap later. Glaser remained composed and held onto the lead the duration of the IO laps. Surber tried for a couple laps 10 get by Thomas and made it before the finish line, coming in third after Clement; Thomas and Semar came next. Mark Rakestraw and Dan Conway both tried to be first in the 250cc Expert class. John Rollo, Greg Bonin and Rickey Glaser pulled the remaining troops. Conway was moving on Rakestraw for a pass and succeeded by the third lap as Rakestraw was going high in his turns, and Conway cut underneath, commanding first. Glaser was geuing ready to stick it to Bonin around the same time, making his move a lap later as Rollo stood between him and Conway. Conway started putting a couple seconds every lap between himself and Rakestraw. Glaser stayed in third till the seventh lap when he pulled off with bike problems. Rollo proudly took his place followed by Bonin, Gary Hughes and Jeff Ellens. Ellens moved up 10 fourth soon afterward as Hughes dropped back. David Jones had come up to the sixth spot. Conway was way out front with two laps to go as Rakestraw rode all alone in back of him. Rollo and Ellens were dicing it out, Rollo winning out and claiming third. Jones was not too far off with Hughes behind him. Glaser attempted to be first on the second rnoto, but Conway stole his chances away and never let up. Trailing Glaser were Rakestraw, Ellens and Rollo. Rakestraw sailed by Glaser on the second lap. Glaser was next bumped in a corner by Ellens who advanced his position in the process. Rollo followed suit and passed Glaser, too. Bonin, Ron Hermann and Hughes were next in line. Conway carved out the track with Rakestraw being his only closest competitor, although he wasn't that close. Ellens pulled off a third at the race's end, succeeded by Bonin, Hermann and Jones. Billy Click took off first in the Over 30 class and looked behind him before the Iirt turn to see if he was going 10 be centerpunched by anyone or just to make sure he was being followed. David Hubbard, Bryan Fox and Chuck Heath confirmed his suspicion. On the third lap, with Click still leading, Hubbard, Fox and Heath were side by side going around the corners and off the jumps, yet as Heath tried to stuff his front wheel in front of Fox, the berm didn't hold him, and hes lid out. Jack Siegrist rode past him as he remounted in fifth. Siegrist taunted Fox and tried desperately 10 get by, but Fox would always outgas him. They crossed the finish jump together, yet Fox took the flag first just inches in front of him. Click repeated his first moto act , both the holeshot and the famous Click "look around behind you." Hubbard came next pursued by Heath. Hubbard attempted to squeeze by Click but was cut off. Click was pulling him by the third lap as Siegrist took Heath 's third away. Hubbard pulled off the track on the fourth lap. Siegrist was reeling Click in on the fifth lap and passed him in a left -hand sweeper, and Click passed him back on the downhill taking the checkers at the finish. Results 60: 1. J .R. Thomas CASPER, WY, MAR. 21 After a nine-year absence, crosscountry endurance racing returned to central Wyoming in the form of an eight-hour race, The two-man team (per bike) event was put on by the High Plains Drifters M.e. The European Cycles-sponsored Open class team of Tim Oler and Mickey Capshaw (Hus) parlayed a consistent, fast and trouble-free performance 10 the overall win. The course consisted of a 27-mile loop over rocks, sagebrush, hardpacJc, mud and snow: A snowstorm the day before the race put the "icing on the cake," thus making the racing most challenging. Conditions at the start of the event were very discouraging for the riders: One to four inches of snow and 2O"F under overcast skies. The race mostly followed a hare and hound format with a dead-engine, Le Mans stan (bikes were impounded 30 minutes prior to the start), Four checkpoints were used with maximum number of checks completed in eight hours determining the winner. The terrain changed from snow 10 ice 10 mud to "ideal traction" to dusty conditions as the race wore on. Afternoon temperatures reach the 4O"F mark. Capshaw jumped to the lead immediately following the shotgun stan with Robin Irwin (Yam) close behind. Third was John Hjelm (Hus). At check one, Capshaw had already established a one-minute lead through the snow and rocks with a seven-rider pack in pursuit. The first lap took a heavy toll on riders and machinery as Dennis "Crash" Kelly (Yam) endoed hard on a rocky downhill section immediately after check one, dropping him from sixth to last; Randy Feuerstein seized his 125 KTM; Irwin and Stan Yount (Yam) tangled with Irwin going down; and the Yamaha 465s of Dan and Larry Rowland and the Harvey/Sinicki entry both seized. Yount went over the bars entering a ravine while in second. Eddie Bright had worked his Bundy's-sponsored PE 175 Suzuki up to third at this point and inherited second as Yount went down. All bikes except the Rowland/Rowland and Harvev/Sinicki entries eventually completed the brutal first lap with Oler/Capshaw first, Bright/Frank Ahlvers second and Hjelm/'jobn Zell (250 Hus) third. Class competition firmed up after the first lap. In the Open class, Oler/ Capshaw increased their lead every lap until the seventh lap when they pitted for eight minutes. However, they returned in the lead with a six- minute advantage over Tony Rich/ Dennis Keyser (Hus)! Third place was contested by Irwin/Dorian Gilben, Dennis and Craig Kelly, Bob Hendy/Randy Frye (Yam) and Willie Plessman/Cunis Clamp (Yam) for most of the event. Hendy/Frye pined for 57 minutes to repair a destroyed rear wheel. P lessman / Clam p had chain and sprocket problems that ended their ride on lap nine. Kelly/Kelly also went out on lap nine with rear wheel failure. The 250cc class was led initially by HjelmlZell until the Tom and Danny Allen entry (European Cycles Hus) took over the lead on lap two, They led until lap three when their bike seized. Hjelm/Zell then led until lap eight when they were slowed by a flat tire. Action was furious behind the leaders as Mike Rogers/Sandy Land (Windy City Cycle Kaw), Yount/ David Andress and Jim and Tim Cowgar (Hon) overcame flat tires and crashes 10 stay within 15 minutes of each other. As of lap eight, the standings were: Rogers/Land first, Yount/ Andress second, Cowgar/ Cowgar third and Hjelm/Zell fourth . HjelmlZell freight-trained into third and were closing fast on second when Zell suffered a back injury on lap 10 that ended their racing for the day , The 200cc class was devastated by Bright!Ahlvers who actually finished fourth overall, a strong performance on a small bike. The Bob Jennings/ Ted Key team (Kaw) was in contention until lap four when Key limped into the pits with both tires flat. They then lost second place 10 the Steve Stadtfeld/Ken Bassett team (Yam). These two teams both suffered through "attires, crashes and engine problems, trading positions for the remainder of the race. However, Key turned a 35-minute lap (with a flat front tire, second fastest lap of the race behind Oler/Capshaw!), and Stadtfeld/Basseu seized at the end. The small-bore class was a circusl Randy and Larry Feuerstein (KTM) led after the first lap despite seizing their engine, with Jeff Oler/Fran O'Donnell (European Cycles Hus) immediately behind. The Feuerstein entry suffered two flat tires on lap two. and Oler/O'Donnell took over the lead. This was short-lived as Oler was penalized a lap for bypassing the starting area at the stan of lap three. Bobby Day /Steve Barger (Hon) then took over the lead followed by Scott Conseen/joe Parker (Kaw). On lap three, both Barger and Conseen crashed, allowing the Feuerstein entry to catch up after repairing the rubber side. Oler and O'Donnell were riding with a vengeance and moved back into contention quickly. The standings as oflap four were Day/ Barger first, Conseen/Parker second, Feuersteins third and Oler/O'Don nell fourth . On lap five, the Feuersteins took over the lead and held it until the end of lap nine when they pined for repairs. Oler/O'Donnell had worked up to second (despite their one lap penally) and then took over first with Day /Barger second and Conseen l Parker third. e Results Ol/ERAI.J..;lim Oler/Mickey Capshaw (Hus). 125: 1.
