Midway through th e rnoto, Yeuo stuffed his Yamaha past Sigrist, taking over the top spot. A few turns later Sigrist took a dive, handing over the second position to Stolt. Sigrist recovered quick ly enough to gain co nt ro l of third. Yetto developed a slight lead to take the win followed by Stolt, Sigrist and Prieur. Sigrist jammed into the early lead again at th e start of the second moto, but Yetto quicklv darted by the leader within a few turns. Stolt held on to third while Prieur was cruising in fourth. Stolt .bega n to pressure Sigrist, but Sigrist managed 10 temporarily hold SIOIt back. In the la tter part of the moto, Sigrist surrendered his position to Stolt. Yetto went on 10 take th e win followed by Stolt and Sigrist. Malcolm Smith's Don G riewe (Suz) h ad a busy day by winning all the 250 and Open Pro mo tes. Taking second and third to Griewe in the 250s were R iverside Suzu ki's Dave Pettigrew and Dale's Modern Cycles' R icha rd Hoffman (Yam). Fourteen riders lined the starting gate a t the start of the first 125cc Beginner class . But only one would emerge victorious - Mike Daversa (Ya m ). Daversa traded moto wins with Mike Magallanes (Yam ), but Daversa 's second rnoto win gave him the overall. Two third place finishes gave Joe Provenghi (Yam) third overall whil e Chris Dominguez (Ya m) settled for fourth . ' In the 250cc Intermedi at e class , it W.I S Duane Mapes (Suz) who took home th e first place trophy after h e combined a 2-1 score for the win. North storms Corona HSMX By Kit Palmer Photos by Ron Lawson CORONA, CA, AP R. 2 At night's end, after all points had been tallied, i t was North High Scool that had gathered the most points to capture the victory in to n igh t's high school motocross competition at Corona Raceway. Helping North to their win was SCOll Mapes (Kaw). Mapes mastered both the 125a nd I75cc Novice classes, topping three of four motos. R u in ing Mapes' chances for a clean sweep was Mike Darnell (Suz) o f Cerritos. Da rn ell darted to the head of the class in the first rnoto of the 125cc Novice class but failed to repeat his performance in th e second rnoto after taking second 10 Mapes. Andy Castro (Suz) of North settled for two consistent third place rides for third overall. Tom Hodgin (Suz) took second in the first moto and grabbed a win in the second to nail the victory for Red la nd s in the 500cc Senior class. Hodgin had 10 co nten d with Todd John son of Cerritos in both motos, The win went to Johnson in th e first rna to , but he couldrr't Iind a wa y past teammate Willie Musty in th e second rnoto for third . Johnson took second overall while Mustv took third. R ick Rodgers took Ilis Pomona Valley Ka....-asaki to the front of the pack at th e start of the first 250cc Pro moto while hotly pursued by Riv erside Suzuki's Rod Brand (Suz), John Greenway (Ka w) and Mathew Carlson (Suz). Soon, Rodgers and Brand developed a gap between the rest of the pack wh ile they battled for the lead . It was a tigh t battle, but Rodgers held on to his slim lead. Nearing th e end of the mOLD, Brand wa s o n ly inc he s behind the leader. When the checkered flag appeared, it was Rodgers who crossed the finish line first , edg in g out Brand.
