They ta ke too many cha n ces and get hurt. And ma ybe they haven 't even peaked yet . Mayb e he's gotten hurt th ree or four times a n d he never was a ble to find out how good he really was. In Europe you know how fast you can go a nd how fast th e other guys can ride a lso . We ride so much , two hours on Saturday then on Sunda y and lap times a re alwa ys kept. So after practice you know how fast yo u can ri de and if you are one of the fastest riders you can pace yo urself. So in a race this means if yo u are beh ind so meo ne an d you kn ow you r lap times were fast er, then you ca n just hold your pa ce and you will ca tch them in four or five laps and yo u know yo u don 't have to berserk it. Let 's talk about training, We don't tra in, we just hang out an d drink beers. (Brad laughs.) OK, I'll talk to Dean and get his side of the story. (Dean M ill er, La ck ey's train er) Brad 's in pretty good shape right now. In so me wa ys he's ahead o f wh ere we ex pected but still a long way from wh ere we want him to be whe n we go to Europe. But we don't wa nt h im to peak a t th e fir st CP. Right off we got five ro ad tri ps, the n back to the States, the n five more roa d trips a nd o nce you' ve h it your pea k th ere is no way but do wn . You ca n ' t hold a peak th ro ugh a schedule like th at. When would you like him to peak? (Mi ller) So mewhe re arou nd h alfway. I think Carlsbad is th e dat e we a lways think or. After th a t we can let him taper off. How does he compare with other seasons? (Miller) 1979 wa s a grea t year for Brad p hys ica lly. T ha t was m y first year wi th him a nd we were pretty slaphappy. I was n' t too sure of the de- . mands o r th e sport but I' ve lea rn ed a lot since th en and th is year will be m uch better. T he best. It 's h ard to co mpare th ough, since man y things have cha nged . Especia lly th e bik es. T he bikes are fa st a nd heavy . So we've been worki ng more o n Brad's strength . H e's always had grea t en d ura nce bu t was a little too weak for th e 500cc class . It 's apparent to me that you have quite substantially increased the size of your upper body since last season. I feel good a bou t the training. We've worked hard to bu ild my strength an d still work. on th e en duran ce. We've tied th em bo th together. Sort of lik e a gy m n ast, power and endurance. Many athletes, especially in sports that emphasize endurance, keep improving as they get older. (M iller) Yes, betw een the ages of 34 and 39 are actually a gr eat physical period for men. The gro wth pl ates h ave been closed for 15 yea rs, their muscles can grow to th eir biggest levels. If th ey co nt in ue to train th ey will be in excelle nt shape an d their sta mi na will be tremen dous. Tell me some specifics about the new training program. It 's a secret! (Everyo ne laug hs.) (Mi ller) Well it's a com bina tio n thin g lots of runnin g and we tim e it fo co m parison. Lo ts of interval tra in ing. Bu t ac tua lly tha t's wh at every one does. Wh at we are doin g dif fer en tly is two main points. Fir st, we' re havin g Brad bu ild u m uch slower th an before. We didn ' wa it fo r J anuary I, the n tra in lik e mad ma n as in th e past . We starte much earlier a nd built so gra dua ll th a t Bra d a lways com p lai ned w were n't push in g hard eno ug h . Bu act ua lly the lon g tapered cli mb mea n he wi ll peak a t a hi gher level. The o ther thi ng is we break up th workou ts th rough out th e day . Ma ny ri ders tra in for two or thre straig ht hours in the mo rning an th e effectiveness of the wor kout d ro off d uring the workou t. We sprea th e workou ts so Brad wi ll ha ve good recovery tim e between exertio and keep full of effective ness . (L ackey) Every year I' ve changed t way I trai n and th is year we h it a bo . right. We've used this same plan as design for riding the C Ps a lso.
